UNSTAGED PROBLEMS

Staging a series of "comeback" performances at House of Blues venues
across the country, Spears hits a glitch after the background track skips
during a May 20 gig in Orlando, Fla. Her solution? She turned away from
the crowd until the song – to which she was lip-synching – got back on track.

NO LOVE LETTER

On June 28, Spears surprises her mother Lynne in Valencia, Calif., with a
note requesting that she stay away from her two grandchildren. At the time,
Lynne Spears joked with X17 photo agency that the paper was a "love letter,"
and clarified that she had not been officially served. A family friend told
PEOPLE of the rift: "[Lynne] is brokenhearted."

WILD TIMES

She may be trying to cool off, but Spears's erratic behavior did nothing but fan the
flames of criticism. She shed her clothes for a skimpy dip in Malibu on July 18 and
drew unwanted attention to herself after impulsively buying a new puppy and reportedly
having a "meltdown" during an photo shoot.

WHAT HAPPENS IN VEGAS ...

Though she intended to make a sweet escape to Las Vegas with
her sons (and brother) July 25, Spears actually violated an agreement
forbidding her from taking the kids out of state without permission.
Also on the trip: a bodyguard for the singer got into a dust-up with
a photographer after shielding the Spears brood from cameras.

TUG OF WAR

With her custody battle raging, Spears continues to hold on to her
little ones, taking Jayden James out for dinner at Beverly Hills
eatery Cravings on Aug. 13. At the time, Spears and Federline
shared visitation rights – though Federline had filed for primary custody.

STOPPING THE SHOW

Spears's opening performance at Sept. 9's MTV Video Music Awards
in Las Vegas gets panned by critics and picked apart by fans online.
Even Spears herself was disappointed with her showing. "She was
just plain nervous because of all the hype," a source told PEOPLE.
She's embarrassed."

EMOTIONAL OUTPOURING

After being charged with a hit-and-run, the emotion finally catches
up with Spears on Sept. 21 in Westwood, Calif. Days earlier, a judge
in her custody case called her a "habitual, frequent and continuous"
user of drugs and alcohol and ordered the singer to take random drug
tests and to see a parenting coach. Making matters worse, an ex-
bodyguard recently revealed that he had witnessed Spears using drugs.

IN THE DRIVER'S SEAT?

Although Britney Spears temporarily lost custody of her children, the pop
star hasn't hit the brakes. After handing off sons Sean Preston, 2, and
Jayden James, 1, she headed to the DMV on Oct. 1, possibly to rectify
one of the court's requests – having a valid California driver's license.

SISTER ACT

Finally, some rare good news: Spears reconciles with her family, hanging
with sister Jamie Lynn en route to Taco Bell in Los Angeles Oct. 5. The pop
singer also enjoyed a reunion with mother Lynne, whose presence was a
comfort just two days after Spears lost custody of her two kids. Said a
source at the time: "Brit really needed her mom."
dodiana
BOOKING IT

The pop star goes incognito but there was no denying her presence
Oct. 16 as she arrived at the Van Nuys Jail to take her booking picture
(in connection to two driving-related misdemeanor charges). Spears
was described as "cooperative" as she smiled and was fingerprinted.

CHART ATTACK

While the reviews were generally positive, Spears's latest album, Blackout
failed to claim the top spot (as expected) on the Billboard 200 chart. Just
one day before, Spears was ordered to pay $120,000 in lawyer fees for ex
Kevin Federline.

MOB SCENE

Britney Spears – and the paparazzi! – arrive at family court in Los Angeles on
Oct. 26 to face off with Kevin Federline. At the time, Superior Court Commissioner
Scott Gordon made no ruling, though he heard testimony in the ongoing custody battle.

DOING HER BEST

Spears makes it a Halloween mash-up – Is she a showgirl? A fiesta queen?
Both? – during Heidi Klum's annual costume extravaganza at Hollywood's
the Green Door on Oct. 31. That morning, the pop star called in to Ryan
Seacrest's radio show to defend herself, saying, "It's sad how people ...
how cruel our world can be. But at the end of the day you gotta to know
in your heart that you are doing the best that you can."

They looked mighty cozy at an Emmys party in September, but later denied being in a realtionship. Now, “Heroes” stars Hayden Panettiere and Milo Ventimiglia finally seem to be a real item. And, regardless of the fact that Ventimiglia is technically old enough to be Panettiere’s dad (he’s 30, she’s only 18), Panettiere’s family has given Ventimiglia the thumbs up.

“Hayden’s mom adores Milo. She thinks he’s so cute,” a family friend told People. "She tells her friends that he's her boyfriend. She's very proud.”

The mag reports that during a December trip to New York City, Ventimiglia hung out with the entire Panettiere family. “He's even met her grandparents. He fits in perfectly with the family.” Panettiere’s rep doesn’t comment on her client’s personal life.

“Heroes” co-stars Milo Ventimiglia and

Britney’s lawyers quit custody case
Attorneys: Communication ‘breakdown’ makes representation ‘impossible’

Britney Spears’ lawyers in her custody case have filed papers to withdraw as her attorneys.

MSNBC News Services
updated 8:41 p.m. ET Jan. 2, 2008

LOS ANGELES - Britney Spears’ lawyers in her custody battle with ex-husband Kevin Federline are quitting.

The law firm Trope and Trope asked a court Wednesday to be relieved as Spears’ attorneys. The firm says there’s been a “breakdown” in communication with the pop princess that makes representing her “impossible,” according to the filing, obtained by CelebTV.com.

Sources told celebrity Web site TMZ.com that the pop star’s absences from a deposition scheduled for today was a factor in her lawyers’ decision to withdraw from the case.
Story continues below ↓advertisement

According to Access Hollywood, if a judge grants the motion, Trope and Trope will be the third legal team since the fall of 2007 to split with the pop star.

She was originally represented in her divorce and custody battle with Federline by Laura Wasser. In September she switched to Marci Levine, who served just two days as her lawyer.

A message left with a publicist for Spears’ record label was not immediately returned.

Spears and Federline have been wrangling for months over custody of their sons, 2-year-old Sean Preston and 1-year-old Jayden James.

Federline has temporary custody because Spears, who has limited visitation rights, has defied court orders. The two were married in October 2004 and finalized their divorce in July.

On a separate legal front, an attorney for Spears wants the city attorney’s office to prove that the pop star is a permanent California resident and is subject to state laws that require her to have a valid California driver’s license.

Spears faces up to a year of probation if convicted in a misdemeanor case of driving without a valid license, a charge to which she has pleaded not guilty. The case stems from a videotaped fender-bender in a parking lot in August. A hit-and-run charge has been dismissed.

Spears attorney J. Michael Flanagan earlier Wednesday requested that prosecutors be required to demonstrate that Spears, who owns homes in Louisiana and Florida, intends to make Los Angeles her permanent legal home.

“If they can establish that Britney is domiciled here in California, that she permanently intends to stay here, then she does have a requirement to get a license,” Flanagan said in an interview. “Basically, it’s a fix-it ticket.”

Flanagan said Spears had a valid Louisiana license at the time of the incident and got a California license six days after the complaint was filed.

A call seeking comment from the city attorney’s office was not immediately returned. The next court date is Jan. 25.

Celebrity Cast Makes 'Apprentice' More Annoying

Donald Trump loves to hear himself talk.

And he has a lot to say about the latest edition of his NBC reality show, “The Celebrity Apprentice” (premiering Thursday night at 9 on WHDH, Ch. 7).

During a recent conference call with reporters, The Donald, not surprisingly, declared this installment to be “the best ‘Apprentice’ we’ve done, and that includes ‘Apprentice’ No. 1, which actually became, for many weeks, the No. 1 show on television.”

In the seventh season of the series, 14 celebrities, including country music star Trace Adkins, actor Stephen Baldwin, actress Marilu Henner, KISS lead singer Gene Simmons, mixed martial arts fighter Tito Ortiz and former contestant Omarosa (apparently she, too, is a celebrity), compete to win $1 million for the charity of their choice.

“For every person we took, we turned down five,” Trump said. “Now there were a few that really wanted to be on the show, but they didn’t want to be fired. I mean, I could name a couple that are really good.”

Of course, he didn’t.

“I think everyone was going for their personal best,” Henner said of the other contestants. “It was a great mix, too, because I think everybody brought something different. It’s going to be a lot of fun for people to watch and nothing like anyone expects.”

Henner and Simmons said they did not receive any special treatment because of their celebrity status. As in seasons past, the contestants lived together. Their day began at 6 a.m. at the latest and sometimes went as late as 1 a.m., seven days a week. A doctor was brought to the set because some of the contestants (the network wouldn’t say which) suffered from exhaustion.

This year, instead of getting a reward, the winning team goes to a room dubbed “The War Room” to watch Trump fire someone.

In true reality show fashion, Trump promises plenty of feuding. “There’s some unbelievable hatred among people on this show as the show goes along - beyond anything I’ve seen, beyond anything in ‘Apprentice 1’ or ‘2,’ ” he said. “The level of the spirit and viciousness, even, was just unbelievable . . . and I realized that each one of these folks has a big reputation to protect and a big brand to protect.”

Simmons, who said Trump approached him about doing the show, agreed.

“I’m lucky enough, blessed to, I guess, be the king of my own domain, ad infinitum, ad nauseam. But the question is, if the rug is pulled out from under you and you don’t have your support system, your staff, your infrastructure, how good are you really? I mean, I’m the rat that knew the maze to get to the cheese. But how good am I in a brand new maze?”

Family Custodial Dispute At Spears Residence!

The trainwreck that is Unfitney keeps on spiraling out of control!

The cops were called to Britney Spears house at The Summit in Beverly Hills on Thursday over a family custodial dispute, PerezHilton.com has learned exclusively.

We're hearing that police were called after Unfitney kept her kids after the court-appointed time that she was supposed to give them back.

"She refused to give the children to Kevin's bodyguard," a source tells us.

Police were at Spear's house in the gated community of The Summit for over three hours.

K-Fed's attorney, Mark Vincent Kaplan, was even spotted entering the enclave!

Anne Kiley, one of Britney's attorney's, was also there, we're told - as were court officials.

The paparazzi were going insane outside The Summit, we're told. And news helicopters were hovering above!!!!

As police were with Britney, another cop car kept guard at the gate, we've learned.

Our sources tell us that police are making paparazzi park a quarter mile away and are making them walk to The Summit.

As of 10:00 PM Pacific, the cops are still at Brit Brit's.

"Every car that is pulling out of the summit is being flooded with papparazzi flashbulbs because they think it might be Brit," an on-the-scene source tells us.

The court is not gonna take Thursday night's drama lightly!

"This is the last straw," a source close to Federline tells us.

Update: Police are saying on the record that the incident at Britney's house is a "family custodial dispute that we are trying to resolve … peacefully by court order."

Update: The cops threatened to arrest Spears if she did not hand over custody of the kids.

Idiot!

The Fallout

Britney Spears' freakout on Thursday night could cost her custody of her kids!

The former pop star refused to hand over her children to Kevin Federline's bodyguard - as ordered by the court - and cops were called to handle the situation.

What does this all mean?

A source connected to the case reveals exclusively to PerezHilton.com that….

"Mark Vincent Kaplan [Kevin Federline's lawyer] will likely ask for an ex-parte hearing first thing Friday morning."

That means he's gonna ask the court for an emergency hearing, cuz Britney fucked up big time last night.

This war is about to get nuclear!

Blame Drugs!!! Britney Under The Influence!!!!!!

The local ABC affiliate in Los Angeles is reporting that Spears was found by police to be under the influence of some unknown substance upon arrival!!!

Britney is at a stand off with police over returning custody of her kids to K-Fed.

Update: Federline himself has shown up!

Update #2: The kids are back with Kevin now.

Thank God!!!!!!

Britney needs to be arrested!!!!!

Britney's Breakdown

Britney Spears was rushed to the emergency room on Thursday night after a stand-off with police.

Cops were called to the trainwreck's house after she refused to hand over custody of her kids to Kevin Federline's bodyguard.

The showdown lasted almost FOUR hours and K-Fed showed up, as did his lawyer and a representative for Spears law firm, you know, the ones that want to quit.

Police have said that Spears was discovered to be under the influence of an unknown substance.

Thankfully the children are back with K-Fed now and Spears will be held for psychiatric evaluation at the hospital.

Hopefully the court will order Britney to undergo 30 days - or more - of mental evaluation.

K-Fed Arrives At The Hospital

He is a good guy!

Federline arrived to Cedars Sinai around 12:20 A.M., PerezHilton.com has learned.

Kevin is worried about the mother of his children, who was rushed to the hospital after being found by police under the influence of an unknown substance and illegally keeping Tater Tot and Small Fry hostage.

Those Poor Kids!

Sean Preston Federline was spotted in a car following an ambulance that carried his mother as she was rushed to the emergency room on Thursday night.

Britney was found to be under the influence of an unknown substance, police said.

Police were called to Spears' house after she held her children hostage, defying a court order to return custody of her children to Kevin Federline at the legally-mandated time.

Spears is currently being held at Cedars Sinai Medical Center for psychiatric evaluation.

After that, we hope she's arrested!

We hope Tater Tot and Small Fry get a lot of counseling.

They're gonna be so fcuked up!

Britney's Condition

Britney Spears held her kids hostage on Thursday night. Cops had to be called to her home after she refused to turn over custody of her children to Kevin Federline's bodyguard, as she was required to do.

Sean Preston and Jayden James are now in the safe and better hands of their father and Britney was rushed to the emergency room for psychiatric evaluation and because police observed her to be under the influence of some unknown substance.

Additionally, according to new reports:

"The stress and mental anguish of the ongoing custody battle and deposition has caused Spears to 'lose a tremendous amount of weight in the past several weeks.'"

We hope police searched Britney's home for any illegal substances!

Britney Wheeled Out on a Gurney!!

OMG THE DRAMA! TMZ is there as Britney Spears was just wheeled out of her home on a gurney by paramedics. Look at that shot of her inside the ambulance -- she's frickin' smiling! Why God, why?!?

Once in the ambulance, paramedics can be seen trying to strap her legs down before taking off.

We're told Britney is being taken to a local hospital on a "medical hold" -- essentially a mental evaluation. Cops found her earlier this evening at her home under the influence of an "unknown substance."

Cops were called to the popnightmare's home in Beverly Hills this evening, after she reportedly refused to return custody of her two kids back over to their father's bodyguard. Oh, the insanity of it all!

UPDATE: Britney has arrived at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. We're told as she was brought out of the ambulance, she flipped off the waiting paparazzi. Oh my God. That Britney's shameless!

Hospital Source on Britney: “None of Us Wanted to Go Sit With Her”

An insider at L.A.’s Cedars-Sinai Medical Center tells Usmagazine.com that nobody wanted to be Britney Spears’ monitor last night.

Spears was rushed to the hospital around 11 p.m. and was designated a "special needs" patient, meaning "they have either overdosed or tried to commit suicide,” the source says. (See her being wheeled on a stretcher here.)

With “special needs" patients, the hospital source said, “we watch them so they don't hurt themselves and watch the people who come visit them to make sure they don't pass anything to them.

“So we got a call to go have someone sit with her,” the source added. “None of us wanted to go sit with her."

Source: Britney Went “Completely Psycho” on Hospital Gurney
Friday January 4, 2008

Britney Spears went “completely psycho” as she was rushed to L.A.’s Cedars-Sinai Thursday, a source tells Usmagazine.

“They had to strap her down like a mental patient and she was going between laughing and hysterics,” the source adds, calling it “a total psychotic breakdown. She just went crazy."

Another Spears pal tells Us: "I guess she has good days and bad days - it's mental instability. All she has is to think of something sad and she goes crazy.”

After she defied court-mandated visitation hours Thursday night by refusing to turn over her two sons to ex-husband Kevin Federline, police were called to her home and later a reportedly intoxicated Spears was rushed via ambulance to L.A.'s Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.

A hospital source tells Usmagazine that Spears has been designated a "special needs" patient, meaning "they have either overdosed or tried to commit suicide. So we go stay with these patients and monitor them constantly. We watch them so they don't hurt themselves and watch the people who come visit them to make sure they don't pass anything to them."

K-Fed's Lawyer Headed to Court

TMZ has learned K-Fed's lawyer, Mark Vincent Kaplan, will scurry to court this morning at 8:30 AM and ask the Commissioner to strip Brit of her visitation rights -- at least for now. We're told there may not be much of an argument and it's almost certain the Commish will see Kaplan's point. Attorney Tara Scott from the law firm of Trope and Trope will represent Brit -- awkward, since the firm has asked to withdraw as counsel.

As we reported, Britney is at Cedars-Sinai on a "5150 hold," meaning there's evidence she's a danger to herself or others -- others as in her kids.

Here's what's interesting. We've been reporting for several months now that Britney doesn't have a drug or alcohol problem -- that her instability is mental, not chemical. Well placed sources tell us what happened last night is not rooted in drugs, and that of late, her mental state has deteriorated to the point that what happened at her home was not unexpected.

Arterton cast as new 'Bond' girl

British newcomer Gemma Arterton has been cast as the new Bond girl for the latest installment of the James Bond franchise, currently filming in London for Columbia Pictures and MGM, the film's production companies said.

Arterton will play "Fields" in the Marc Forster-directed movie, which has the working title of "Bond 22" and stars Daniel Craig as Agent 007.

Talk of Arterton's casting has been swirling around the blogosphere and in British tabloids since mid-December, but have remained unconfirmed by the producers. On Friday, Eon Prods. in London and Santa Monica-based Danjaq Prods., as well as Arterton's agent, ICM in London, confirmed the casting. Details of her character were not available, but a Danjaq rep said "it's a nice-sized role."

The film will take up where 2006's "Casino Royale" left off.

Arterton's credits include the recently released comedy "St. Trinian's," where she played schoolgirl Kelly, opposite Colin Firth and Rupert Everett. The movie, about the madcap adventures of a group of unruly girls at a boarding school, is an updated version of a movie franchise from the 1950s and '60s.

Britney Spears locked up in psych ward

Britney Spears is carried on a stretcher to a waiting ambulance from her Beverly Hills home on Jan. 3, 2008. Click and scroll down for tmz.com video.

Continuing her downward spiral from pop tart to deranged diva, Britney Spears was locked in a psych ward on Friday night after a meltdown that ended when she was strapped to a gurney and rushed to a hospital.

Spears was deemed a "special needs" patient and held "for her own welfare" for at least 72 hours in a wing of Cedars-Sinai Medical Center where suicidal patients are treated, sources said.

Spears, who sparked a confrontation with cops by refusing to return her sons to ex-husband Kevin Federline after a court-approved visit, later lost all visitation rights to their sons, Sean Preston, 2, and Jayden James, 1.

"I'm not happy about the events," Federline's lawyer Mark Kaplan said. "Nobody wins."

Kaplan refused to say if Spears had threatened to kill herself. He said the boys were reunited with their dad.

Federline's sister-in-law, Alisha Federline, said seeing Spears hauled out of her house like a mental patient was "very disturbing."

"I'm just hopeful that everyone is okay," she told the Daily News.

The LAPD first said Spears was under the influence of an unknown substance when she went nuts, but later retracted it.

Sources close to the singer said she was stressed out from having to testify at a humiliating deposition Thursday where she had to answer for a litany of examples of her bad parenting.

Spears has been accused of driving with one of her kids in her lap, driving without a license with the children in the car and an incident in which one of the kids fell out of a highchair.

Spears snapped when Federline's flunkies arrived at her Studio City home around 8 p.m. that same day to pick up their sons.

Rather than comply, Spears grabbed Jayden and locked herself and the tot in a bedroom for three hours and refused to come out - even after cops arrived.

"There was a time where she was within the residence and wasn't available to be speaking to the officers, apparently," Officer Ana Aguirre of the LAPD said. "There was no threat to the children."

It wasn't until nearly midnight that police pried Spears out of the house.

Images of her being wheeled to an ambulance - and Us Weekly magazine reports of her "going between laughing and hysterics" - quickly hit cyberspace.

Citing patient privacy, Cedars-Sinai declined to comment on Spears. A source who has spent time in the ward said she will be under constant surveillance.

"It's two to a room and she'll have potluck meals and have to do her own washing and make her own bed," the source said. "She'll meet with shrinks and maybe do group meetings. It will do her some good."

Spears has been on a tear since she and Federline divorced in November 2006. She lost primary custody of the boys in October. She was limited to visits with her kids three times a week and forced to undergo random drug and alcohol tests.

A pop phenom who burst onto the charts with hits like "Baby One More Time" and "Oops! . . . I Did It Again," Spears has been caught boozing it up with Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan, was photographed without panties, got yanked off the stage of a strip club and shaved off all her hair.

Spears' latest episode comes on the heels of revelations that her kid sister, 16-year-old TV star Jamie Lynn Spears, is pregnant.

Spears loses visitation and paparazzi battle

A court commissioner's temporary ruling follows the pop star's three-hour custody standoff, which ends with her being involuntarily hospitalized. Police say it was 'for her own welfare.'

LOS ANGELES -- Britney Spears was hospitalized as a Los Angeles court commissioner Friday barred her from visiting her two young sons.

But it was the behavior of the paparazzi that was generating debate after a bizarre media standoff outside her hillside mansion.

Spears is perhaps the most pursued celebrity in Hollywood. So when she allegedly refused to hand over one of her children at the end of a custody visit Thursday night, dozens of photographers were outside her door. Many more converged on the Studio City house -- including some groupies -- after police and paramedics arrived.

Then, after Spears was strapped to a gurney and wheeled into an ambulance, photographers chased the van to Cedars Sinai Medical Center even though it had a police escort.

The drama was blogged in real time and broadcast live on local TV. The tale was burning up Internet traffic Friday, but there was sentiment -- even within the celebrity journalism world -- that things might have gone too far.

While photographers have long followed Spears and other stars around when they shop, hit the clubs and hike, the 24/7 stakeout is something relatively new.

"There are about 50 to 60 guys who follow her wherever she goes. If it is the middle of the night, five or 10 of them will be on her," said Frank Griffin, a veteran paparazzo and co-owner of the Bauer Griffin agency. "What you saw last night, it has been like that for a while wherever she goes. She has nothing left but those moments."

Griffin said Spears' latest troubles underscore the growing aggressiveness of a small paparazzi group that follows the star. . They endure hours of mundane tasks in hopes of getting "money shots," such as the time the pop star shaved her hair at a San Fernando Valley salon. Mainstream photographers too have joined the chase.

Some photographers said that Spears loves the attention and is often seen mugging and posing for the cameras. But there are those who believe that Spears must take responsibility for her actions.

"People don't necessarily need to be informed about everything in her life, but a lot of people still look up to her," said James Benson, 39, a computer analyst from Compton, as he hung out on Robertson Boulevard, a favorite spot for both Spears and the paparazzi. "She does have a responsibility to keep her nose clean."

Others in the trendy shopping district say the photographers have become part of the problem.

"Even a year ago, the paparazzi were going too far and it keeps getting worse," said Amanda Pugh, a Los Angeles waitress and model. "If they just left her alone, she could maybe get herself together."

A similar debate was going on at celebrity news Web sites, with readers expressing sympathy for Spears and rage at paparazzi for invading her private space.

"So, paparazzi, now you should be happy, you followed her each second taking photos and videos to fill your Web site and earn money by destroying (an) other's life," one reader wrote on the US Magazine's Web site.

"Don't kid yourself, we're all contributors to this disaster," wrote another reader.

The increasingly aggressive role of the paparazzi has been an issue in Hollywood circles for years. Two years ago, a group of Hollywood lawyers who represent stars urged the Los Angeles District Attorney's office to consider charging some photographers who constantly follow their clients with stalking. The request came after a series of incidents in which celebrities said they got into car accidents because photographers were pursuing them.

The Thursday incident at Spears' home began around 8 p.m. after bodyguards from her ex-husband, Kevin Federline, went to her house to pick up Sean Preston, 2, and Jayden James, 1. They were scheduled to return to their father's custody, authorities said.

By the time officers arrived at the home, Spears had turned over her older son to the bodyguards but had locked herself in her bedroom-bathroom suite with Jayden James, according to officials.

Officers reported that Spears was incoherent and arguing with officers, sources said.

Police determined Federline had legal custody of the children at that time, said Ana Aguirre, a department spokeswoman.

Officers waited approximately three hours before Spears agreed to leave the home; the youngest son was taken to the hospital for unspecified reasons.

Police said Spears was under the influence of an unknown substance. She was not arrested and was subsequently hospitalized "for her own welfare," said April Harding, another LAPD spokeswoman

By the time Spears was taken to the ambulance, more than 50 people were outside -- many snapping photos and shooting video.

Griffin said it's wrong to blame onto the celebrity media for Spears' situation.

"Britney has a symbiotic relationship with the (paparazzi)," he said. "There is no longer a degree of separation. There is a link that cannot be broken."

Spears' behavior became erratic in 2006. Paparazzi photos show her driving down Pacific Coast Highway while holding her infant son in her lap rather than securing him in a child car seat, which led to an inquiry by L.A. County child welfare officials.

That was followed by her trips to drug rehab and the shaving of her head. Then she was slapped with misdemeanor charges related to a hit-and-run after she allegedly left the scene of an accident.

A court commissioner subsequently gave Federline temporary custody and Spears limited visitation rights to their children.

In the wake of Thursday night's incident, Court Commissioner Scott Gordon on Friday indefinitely suspended Spears' visitation rights with her two toddlers.

"I'm not happy about any of these events," said Mark Vincent Kaplan, Federline's attorney after the hearing. "There are no winners here."

Actors Won't Circle the Globes

by Natalie Finn
Fri, 4 Jan 2008 04:49:48 PM PST

Even the most versatile actors out there have no interest in taking on the role of scab.

The Screen Actors Guild announced Friday that, to maintain solidarity with striking Hollywood writers, none of this year's 72 acting nominees will attend the 65th Annual Golden Globe Awards.

"After considerable outreach to Golden Globe actor nominees and their representatives over the past several weeks, there appears to be unanimous agreement that these actors will not cross WGA picket lines to appear on the Golden Globe Awards as acceptors or presenters," SAG President Alan Rosenberg said in a statement.

"We applaud our members for this remarkable show of solidarity for striking Writers Guild of America writers."

The possibility of a red carpet-as-usual seemingly just went from slim to none. Designers everywhere are weeping into their crepe de Chine.

Rosenberg went on to encourage SAG members to forego appearances on NBC and ABC's late-night offerings for either The Late Show with David Letterman or The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson on CBS, both of which returned to the air Wednesday with their writing staffs intact.

Getting chatted up by Jay Leno, Conan O'Brien or Jimmy Kimmel would involve crossing a picket line, Rosenberg said, "creating the same situation that has led to the consensus among actors to skip the Golden Globes."

"As I have said since this strike began on Nov. 5, we must stand united with our brothers and sisters at the WGA," his statement concluded.

And the WGA, for one, sounds very pleased with the latest turn of events.

"We are grateful to our brothers and sisters in SAG for their continued solidarity and support," WGA West president Patric Verrone said in a statement. "The entire awards show season is being put in jeopardy by the intransigence of a few big media corporations. We urge the conglomerates to return to the bargaining table they abandoned and negotiate a fair and reasonable deal with writers to put this town back to work."

NBC, the Globes' network of choice this year, said Monday that the Jan. 13 will air in prime time as scheduled. It isn't known yet whether SAG's decision will change things, but it will undoubtedly put a damper on any hope for big ratings—unless at-home viewers are particularly interested in what a star-less awards ceremony looks like.

In the meantime, industry trades are speculating that the kudosfest is going to be postponed. Indeed, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and Dick Clark Productions are scrambling to somehow make it work.

"The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has been placed in an extremely difficult position with the ongoing Writers Guild strike," HFPA president Jorge Camara said in a statement. "We are making every effort to work out a solution that will permit the Golden Globes to take place with the creative community present to participate. We hope to announce a resolution to this unfortunate predicament on Monday."

While producers expressed hope early Thursday that an interim deal with the WGA might be reached that would allow striking scribes to contribute scripted nuggets of humor and sentiment to the Globes, ŕ la the arrangement made with Letterman's Worldwide Pants Inc., the writers quickly shot down the idea.

"Dick Clark Productions is a struck company. As previously announced, the Writers Guild will be picketing the Golden Globes," read the WGA's to-the-point statement.

The union has granted waivers permitting writers to contribute to the 14th annual SAG Awards on Jan. 27 and the 2008 Independent Spirits Awards Feb. 23.

Clark's company isn't enjoying its seeming odd-man-out status, either.

"We are disappointed that the WGA has refused to bargain with us in good faith. It is apparent that we are being treated differently from similarly situated production companies," the Globes producer lashed out Friday in a statement.

In a joint letter to NBC Universal chief executive Jeff Zucker, a group of top public relations firms reiterated their clients' appreciation for the Hollywood Foreign Press and how they "would love the opportunity to be recognized for their work," but said that the actors will only show up if the WGA, NBC and Dick Clark Productions can cut a deal.

"After much discussion with our clients, we have concluded the vast majority of the talent we represent are not comfortable crossing a picket line," the publicists said.

Brit's in Pieces: The Update

While you were at lunch, K-Fed's lawyer used an emergency hearing to petition—and get—full custody of Sean Preston and Jayden James. Brit was also stripped of her visitation rights.
No surprise, additional details surrounding the Britney Spears meltdown tragedy just keep getting uglier and uglier...

* Brit's former assistant Alli Sims had to break through a bathroom door to reach the singer. According to Page Six, Alli used a hammer to reach Brit and Jayden and then called emergency services. (A claim Alli denies to Us.) She had reportedly been at the house ever since an allegedly distraught Spears returned from a custody deposition, and she was trying to calm her down. The cost of a new door is nothing compared with the therapy bills Jayden's gonna require after this.

* One-year-old Jayden was taken to the hospital after the incident Thursday night. A family insider tells Page Six Britney had told officers he had a bruise on him, adding, "And she said she did not do it." He was examined, but he didn't require treatment and was released into Kevin's care.

* Once Britney reached the hospital, she was processed by a nurse and then stripped, and her clothing and personal belongings were locked away in a safe, purportedly to prevent her from harming herself, according to Page Six. The singer was then examined by a psychiatrist concerning her mental state.

* Paparazzi leech Adnan Ghalib may have spent a lot of time with Britney lately, but he wasn't there yesterday, nor has he visited her at Cedars-Sinai, according to People. Thankfully, her father, Jamie Spears, and pal Sam Lutfi have checked in on her. Hey, even if they have been feuding, we're happy she has family to lean on. The girl's gonna need 'em now more than ever.

Bipolar* Britney?

Is Britney Spears an out-of-control Hollywood celebrity, or is she suffering from something much more serious?

A source close to the family tells me family members believe the embattled pop princess may have bipolar disorder. According to the source, family members have been concerned for months because they’re under the impression that Spears has not been following doctors’ orders in treating the supposed illness.

“This was going on before the head shaving,” my source said. “She wouldn’t listen to anyone. She said she knew what she was doing.”

The source said this morning that family and friends are not surprised it has come to this. “She needs major help," I am told. "Let’s hope she will finally get it.”

And let’s hope the new year means new healthy beginnings for Spears.

* Bipolar disorder is not a single disorder, but a category of mood disorders defined by the presence of one or more episodes of abnormally elevated mood, clinically referred to as mania. Individuals who experience manic episodes also commonly experience depressive episodes or symptoms, or mixed episodes which present with features of both mania and depression. These episodes are normally separated by periods of normal mood, but in some patients, depression and mania may rapidly alternate, known as rapid cycling. The disorder has been subdivided into bipolar I, bipolar II and cyclothymia based on the type and severity of mood episodes experienced.

Britney Sprung from Joint

TMZ has confirmed that Britney Spears has been released from Cedars-Sinai hospital, following an explosive morning in which she was done, done, done with it!

Sources say the hospital released her without notifying any of the principles involved in the ongoing kiddie drama. So, you ask, how could she have been released so quickly, given that she had been declared a danger to herself and others?

We're told the "5150 hold" means that she can be held against her will for a max of 72 hours, but if the hospital determines she is no longer a danger, they can release her before that.

UPDATE: Additional sources now tell TMZ Cedars absolutely made the decision on its own -- without consulting any of the lawyers in the case. We're told it is Cedars policy (and the policy of other California hospitals) to evaluate whether the "danger" has subsided at any point during the 72-hour hold.

As we have reported, even though there is significant evidence that Brit has a bipolar disorder, Cedars cannot hold her against her will to treat such a problem. If doctors determine she is no longer a danger, they must let her go -- pure and simple.

Brit Blindsided By Phil -- Hospital Acts Curiously

TMZ has learned Dr. Phil's visit with Britney Spears was not exactly as advertised.

People on the 7th floor at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center say the Doctor arrived at about 7:30 AM Saturday. We're told Britney did not invite him in; she didn't even know he was coming. Sources say it was Brit's parents who told Dr. Phil to go to the hospital. When he walked into her room, we're told, a blindsided Britney walked out -- and eventually came back.

Sources say Phil tried speaking with Spears for about 15 minutes -- not an hour as Dr. Phil's press release states --but she wanted none of it. We're told Phil was doing almost all the talking. As for walking with her to the car on her way out -- again as his release states -- we're told, if he was walking behind her, that's news to her. She absolutely was not accompanied by him.

Sources say Dr. Phil somehow convinced Brit's mom and dad to be on his show, which will tape Monday and air Tuesday (it was just moved up a day), but, as one person put it, "Based on the interaction between Dr. Phil and Britney this morning, it'll be a cold day in hell before Britney goes on his show." We're told she absolutely will not appear on the program.

Sources say Dr. Phil wants to do a television intervention, something that isn't sitting well with some of the people who have known for a while that Britney has a very serious mental condition -- likely a bipolar disorder that is now in the red zone.

TMZ contacted Cedars to find out why the hospital let a television doctor on a floor that has such fragile patients, particularly since Britney had no idea he was coming. It's especially troublesome that Cedars let Dr. Phil go uninvited to Britney's room, since she had already been discharged and presumably had a right to know if someone wanted to visit. A Cedars rep made it short and sweet, telling us "No comment."

A rep from the "Dr. Phil" show had no comment as well, other than "Dr. Phil met with Ms. Spears at family members' invitation."

Everyone Has An Opinion

Both Donald Trump and Simon Cowell are chiming in on Britney Spears and offering the beleaguered mother of two advice.

"This is Anna Nicole Smith all over again!" says Trump. "Someone needs to help her. Five years ago every teenager wanted to be just like her. She was so incredible, the cleanest and so beautiful, she was the ultimate teen and everybody just worshiped her. To see what's unfolding, being carried out in a stretcher in an ambulance, not even knowing where she was, it's just really very sad."

Cowell offers, "It looks to me at the moment she's out of control. If I sat down with Britney, I would, number one, remind her of all the good things in her life: her kids, her money, her success, everything. I would take her out of where she's living at the moment and tell her to live with her family, normally for five months. She's welcome to call me any time."

Johnny Depp Sings
After belting for the first time in "Sweeney Todd," Depp rocks out on his life in music
GAVIN EDWARDSPosted Jan 09, 2008 5:46 AM

Attend the tale of Johnny Depp: still Hollywood's most perverse superstar, he has followed up the family-friendly Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy with Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, a buckets-of-blood saga of cannibalism that is also — gulp! — a musical. That's right, Depp sings for the first time ever onscreen, and critics are warbling his praises for tackling the notoriously difficult score from theater legend Stephen Sondheim. This gripping adaptation of the 1979 Broadway hit is the sixth movie Depp has done with director Tim Burton, for whom he's played misfits from Edward Scissorhands to Ed Wood. But a full-out musical is a first for both of them. And the pain-wracked intensity Depp brings to this London barber obsessed with revenge is sparking Oscar talk.

Today Depp meets me in a suite at the Chateau Marmont in Hollywood. His jeans are ripped, and his black shirt is open at the neck to reveal a GONZO necklace, a tribute to his late friend, Hunter S. Thompson. Depp looks around the tastefully appointed room. "They've really done this place up," he says. "I lived in the Chateau for a while, years ago, and it was dingy but great. It was like they bought the couches from the Ramada Inn that was closed down by the Health Department in 1970." Depp has come a long way from his childhood in Kentucky, the youngest of four children. His parents — a waitress and a city engineer — moved more than twenty times while he was young, settling in Miramar, Florida, when he was seven, and divorcing when he was fifteen. These days, Depp, 44, and his family (French singer-actress Vanessa Paradis and their two children, Lily-Rose, 8, and Jack, 5) split their time between Los Angeles and the South of France.

Conversation with the quick-witted Depp can careen from whether new popes get their genitals cupped to ensure the leader of the Catholic Church is sufficiently male ("I think an elderly man waddles up to you and reaches under your dress") to his out-of-control life before he met Paradis ("I'm a dumb-ass, and I poisoned myself for years. Now I understand things better").

It's been seventeen years since Depp starred in Cry-Baby, the Fifties musical pastiche from John Waters, where his singing voice was dubbed. Since Depp performs his own songs in Sweeney Todd, it seemed like the right time to revisit his musical career and how it improbably led him to become one of the most compelling actors of his generation.

Was your family musical at all?

My mom and my dad weren't particularly musical, no. But I did have an uncle who was a preacher, and he played hillbilly bluegrass guitar. So Sunday church services, it was like, "Hallelujah, brothers and sisters," and then he would start picking "Stepping on the Clouds." That was where I got the bug: watching my uncle play the guitar with his little gospel group, right in front of me.

What was the first record you bought?

I don't know if I bought it, but the first record I remember listening to nonstop, oddly, was Dean Martin, Everybody Loves Somebody. And then Boots Randolph. And then the record album of Blackbeard's Ghost, with Peter Ustinov. I'd never seen the film — I didn't see it until I was in my late thirties. But I knew it verbatim. Slightly ironic. And then I turned that corner into preteen and I remember listening to Frampton Comes Alive! too much. My brother's ten years older than me. He grabbed the needle off the album and there was this horrific noise — wrrrraarrrar. He said, "Listen, man, you're killing me. Try this." And he put on Van Morrison's Astral Weeks. And it stirred me. I'd never heard anything like it. I said, "OK, maybe Frampton Comes Alive! is a little tired." Then my brother, very pleased with himself, started turning me on to other things, like the soundtrack to Last Tango in Paris.

Did you wonder why they didn't show the [X-rated] "Tango" on TV?

I was a little kid and it sounded good enough to me. I remember liking the image on the record album, of Brando and Maria Schneider, although I didn't quite understand it. It's a good bit to chew on when you're a kid. Now, thirty-some years later, it's still a pretty good bit to chew on. It's good stuff.

How did listening to music become making music?

When I was twelve, I talked my mom into picking up a Decca electric guitar for me for twenty-five dollars. It had a little blue plush amp. And then, this is horrible, the first thing I did was steal a Mel Bay chord book. I went to this store, stuffed it down my pants and walked out. It had pictures — that's why I needed it so badly, because it was immediate gratification. If I could match those photographs, then I was golden. I conquered it in days. I locked the bedroom door, didn't leave, and taught myself how to play chords. I started learning songs by ear.

What was the first song you could play through?

Every kid with a guitar at that time, the first things that came up were almost always "Smoke on the Water," obviously, and "25 or 6 to 4," by Chicago. But the first song I played all the way through must have been "Stairway to Heaven." I remember getting through the fingerpicking and just cursing Jimmy Page.

What was your first band?

When I was about thirteen, I got together with some other kids in the neighborhood. This one guy had a bass, we knew a guy who had a PA system, we made our own lights. It was really ramshackle and great. We'd play at people's backyard parties. Everything from the Beatles to Led Zeppelin to Cheap Trick to Devo — and "Johnny B. Goode" was the closer.

You've got that wistful look in your eyes.

You're thirteen years old and you're playing rock & roll. Loud. Poorly. But somebody's letting you do it in their back yard. And it was absolute perfection. It was freedom. Right off the bat, there was no question: I had found my future.

This Show Will Go On

Though the Golden Globes were cancelled, the Oscars are determined to proceed as planned.

Show producer, Gil Cates, said on Tuesday, "We are going to do it,. I can't elaborate on how we're going to do it, because I don't want anybody to deal with the elaboration in a way that might impact its success.”

He said the show was "the most unique show on American television” and added: "It has been on through wars and through presidential assassination attempts. It would be shameful if the Oscars were in any way impacted.”

However, that is what may happen.

The Writers Guild has denied the Academy Awards an interm deal and they will likely picket it. The actors won't cross the picket line.

Studio honcho Harvey Weinstein counters, "No matter what anybody says, if the WGA goes on strike and SAG is in support, then there's no Oscar show. It's as simple as that.'"

Sid Ganis, academy president, remains hopeful. "We're not panicking. We're preparing our show, and we're moving forward," he says.

He said it was more likely that the guild would ultimately agree to let its writers work on the Oscars.

That's not gonna happen.

The Oscars are scheduled to air February 24th.
