Ivana Trump Marries for the Fourth Time
The socialite weds her Italian beau amid thousands of flowers, a French orchestra – and guest Donald Trump

With 50 attendants and a $1 million diamond ring, Ivana Maria Trump married Rossano Rubicondi Saturday before 500 friends and family members at Mar-a-Lago, the Palm Beach estate of her ex, Donald Trump.

"I am so happy my friends from around the world came to be with me on my wedding day," Ivana Trump told PEOPLE before the ceremony.

Under a 15-ft. arch covered in orchids and roses, Trump, 59, and Rubicondi, 35, an Italian model-actor she has dated for six years, shared short kisses after exchanging vows. The ceremony was conducted by Judge Maryanne Trump Barry, The Donald's sister, and was attended by the man himself.

Their sons, Donald Jr., 30, and Eric, 24, gave the bride away, while daughter Ivanka, 26, served as mom's maid of honor.

Taking inspiration from A Midsummer Night's Dream, Trump was prepared for a colorful night with three pink dresses: a silk Zuhair Murad wedding gown, a cocktail dress and a dinner dress.

Guests, including actor George Hamilton and Kathy and Rick Hilton, will dine in the gold and white Grand Ballroom amid thousands of flowers, the same room where Donald and Melania Trump hosted their wedding dinner three years ago. A 12-ft.-high chocolate wedding cake was flown in from Germany.

Also imported: the 24-piece orchestra, which flew in from Paris. Says wedding planner Cheryl Clisby: "It proves that no matter what the age of the bride, she gets whatever she wants on her wedding day."

As for how the bride – who was wed to Donald Trump for more than 13 years – is approaching her new marriage, she told PEOPLE last fall at her engagement party: "It just feels right. I have no fears." She called her fiancé "a great guy with a lot of talent" who "always has a smile on his face."

For Rubicondi, he's in as much awe. "She's an amazing woman. Beautiful, smart, sexy, powerful, successful, young in spirit," he told PEOPLE. "We have fun together – otherwise I wouldn't be getting married!"

Full House's Jodie Sweetin Has a Baby Girl

Jodie Sweetin and her husband of less than a year now have their very own Full House: The actress has given birth to a baby daughter, PEOPLE has confirmed.

Baby Zoie was delivered via C-section Saturday afternoon, and arrived weighing 8 lbs. 7 oz. and is 21 in. long.

"Jodie says that she and her husband and family are absolutely thrilled and in love with baby Zoie," says a rep for the actress.

Sweetin announced her pregnancy in September after reportedly giving her sonograms to TMZ.com. In January, she announced to the Celebrity Baby Blog that her due date was April 6 and the baby would be a girl.

The former Full House star, 26, married set designer Cody Herpin, her second husband, in a small Las Vegas ceremony on July 14, 2007. The pair tied the knot at the Little Church of the West in front of a few friends.

At the time, Sweetin told PEOPLE, "Cody is my best friend. I married my best friend, and I couldn't ask for anything more. He's an unbelievable person."

While Cho and his wife prepare for the addition to the family by moving into a new home, he admits he's slightly overwhelmed. Chace Crawford Cheers On a Miss USA Beauty – His Sister

Surrounded by beauty queens at the Miss USA Pageant on Friday, Gossip Girls' Chace Crawford only had eyes for one woman: Miss Missouri.

Of course, Miss Missouri is Candice Crawford, Chace's sister, a 21-year-old blonde beauty who dazzled judges deep into the competition.

But despite a public endorsement from her famous brother, Candice Crawford fell short in her bid to become Miss USA in Las Vegas – that honor went to Miss Texas Crystle Stewart.

While the TV star wasn't wearing an oversized pin on his lapel like the rest of his family, Crawford's support was more vocal. When it was announced that his younger sister made it to the Top 10, Crawford threw his arms in the air, stood up and shouted in celebration.

"The family calls themselves Team Crawford," Candice Crawford told PEOPLE last week while dishing on his brother's recent split from Carrie Underwood.

Judging from Friday though, Crawford will have no trouble finding women. After sitting in his seat in the lower section of Planet Hollywood Hotel's theater, lines of women began forming with girls hoping to get photos with the star. He obliged until the show began.

Crawford wasn't the only celebrity in attendance, however. Judges for the event included Joey Fatone, Heather Mills (who was booed by the crowd upon her introduction) and Project Runway winner Christian Siriano.

Prior to the event, Siriano told PEOPLE: "I'm going at it from a very fashion point of view. Obviously the evening gown and swimsuit portions are very important, so who better to judge that than someone who is actually in fashion?"

Heather Mills Booed, but Parties On in Vegas

Never mind the boos: Heather Mills is just out to have a good time.

After the Miss USA audience booed the judge's introduction Friday night in Las Vegas, the former Mrs. Paul McCartney let loose at a pageant afterparty at hot spot Prive.

Mills hit the dancefloor for a couple of hours and showed off some of her Dancing with the Stars moves shortly after midnight (and after a long conversation with Penthouse exec Marc Bell). At one point, Mills – who settled her $50 million divorce deal last month – grooved to the Donna Summer classic "She Works Hard for the Money."

At 2 a.m., Mills, 40, finally left the club and retreated to her suite at Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino.

The controversial Brit can rest assured she ended her night in Vegas with at least one fan in the States. Earlier, Miss USA pageant co-owner Donald Trump told PEOPLE: "I think America wants more Heather Mills."

Halle Berry Gets Access to Parenting Advice

New mom Halle Berry is getting by with a little help from a friend who knows something about parenting – and Hollywood.

"We've e-mailed, and she's loving motherhood," Nancy O'Dell told PEOPLE at Thursday's National Lampoon's One, Two, Many premiere in Hollywood. Berry, 41, gave birth to daughter Nahla Ariela Aubry last month.

"She is loving every minute of it, couldn't be any happier," Access Hollywood host O'Dell, who is friends with Berry, says. "She's going to be such a great mom."

O'Dell, 42, who herself gave birth last June to daughter Ashby Grace, sent Berry a lengthy e-mail of motherly advice – and the Oscar-winning actress replied with thanks.

"I sent her a whole page e-mail about things I wish friends had told me," O'Dell says. "I said, 'I wish people had given me this advice. They didn't, so I'm going to give it to you.' She was appreciative, really appreciative."

Berry's daughter will be a fine addition to kids' play dates, O'Dell Says, though she joked that she was holding out for Berry to have a boy.

"I'm glad she had a girl, so the girls can play, but the other side of me went, I bet that would be a very attractive young boy to set up with my girl," O'Dell said. "I was pulling for either one."

You have to go through a couple auditions before you get to Randy, Paula and Simon, but I didn’t even make it past the first audition in LA! This time I made it past the other rounds and finally got to the judges. The rest is history!”, said Jordin.

Ms. Meester tells Elle Girl she loved experimenting with her hair color back in the day: “I dyed it every color. I dyed it fire engine red and that didn’t work out. It also had it black and red streaks.”

FYI: To help clarify some rumors that broke earlier this week, costar Nan Zhang never left Gossip Girl because of Leighton. Nan exclusively told JustJared.com herself!

Crash! Boom! Bang!

As was first reported by That Other Blog last night, Britney Spears was involved in a minor car accident on the 101 freeway in SoCal last night ... and despite the attempt by some media outlets who are trying to turn the incident into a major event (I really believe that calling her fender bender a "three car pile-up" is a bit excessive) this was really just a small accident that really amounts to nothing. Here are a few pics from the scene:

Britney Spears is unhurt after being involved in a highway accident Saturday evening in the Los Angeles area. The pop star was driving her 2008 white Mercedes northbound on the 405 connector to the 101 freeway when the collision occurred at 8:18 p.m., the California Highway Patrol confirmed. According to the accident report, "The collision occurred when the driver of the Mercedes, driving in the #3 lane, in stop and go traffic failed to observe the vehicle directly ahead of her come to a complete stop. She attempted to brake but failed to stop her vehicle prior to colliding into the rear of the Nissan [in front of her]." The Nissan, as a result, collided into another car, which was not damaged. No one was injured, according to the report. Later on Saturday night, Spears went out to dinner at Dominick's in West Hollywood with her mother Lynne – driven by bodyguards.

These sorts of things happen on the 101 freeway all the time ... there is constant stop and go traffic and you see these little bumps all the time ... this one just happened to involve Britney Spears. I'm actually quite disgusted by The Sun's reporting of this incident. They quoted a "source" who was allegedly on the scene as saying, "Britney just appeared to lose concentration and drove into the car in front of her." TMZ is reporting that Brit Brit was given a field sobriety report to see if she was driving under the influence of alcohol ... which turned up completely negative. In any event, this whole thing is such a non-issue but it's deffo worth talking about since it involves Britney Spears. [Source, Source]

Earlier in the weekend, Britney was spotted having dinner with her agent Jason Trawick (who, if memory serves, was the person instrumental in getting Britney her guest starring spot on How I Met Your Mother) at Sushi House Unico on Friday night, no doubt cooking up their next plan of attack career-wise:

It's too bad she didn't have Jason drive her around last night, she might've avoided her latest overdramatized car accident. I find it very encouraging that the two met up for dinner because that means that she prolly has some new career opportunities in the near future. Could they have been discussing her next guest starring role on TV? I guess time will tell.

Knives Out

JFXOnline is reporting that Britney Spears's former paparazzi paramour (and, most recently, Kathy Griffin's Beverly Hills shopping buddy) Adnan Ghalib was stabbed in an altercation this weekend in the wake of receiving "more and more death threats in recent weeks" tho the site is light on any further deets about the incident:

Adnan was attacked and stabbed last night but he is doing OK after receiving medical attention for his wounds. He received a stab wound to his arm, facial lacerations as well as a nice shiner. I'm not sure what to make of this considering that he's received more and more death threats in recent weeks. Is it coincidence? I don’t know. But in the ever growing Adnan hating world that some blogs live in, the repeated venom spewed at him could have finally boiled over to the real world ... Yes we're tight with Adnan and all but still, this attack pushed this situation into a whole ‘nother level that I'm having trouble accepting. Hopefully the attackers will be found and brought to justice. And by the way, we're all thankful that Britney wasn’t hurt in her fender bender earlier in the evening.

Curiously, no other site has any information on this attack. One would expect that Finalpixx blog (the paparazzi company that Ghalib worked for before he got involved with Britters) would have some information about this but, as of Sunday evening, there is no mention on their site either. Could this be merely a ploy for Adnan to get more attention in the media now that Britney has cast him asunder or does the guy really have more enemies than he knows what to do with? Hmmm ... I wonder where Kathy Griffin was last night ... she better have a damn good alibi.

"If she comes past the shop, hopefully she'll just keep walking," he told the Los Angeles Times. "I don't really covet that sort of thing."

Hilton, meanwhile, is on tour with beau Benji Madden's band Good Charlotte. "I've never felt so happy and in love, [Benji] is such an amazing guy and life has never been better!" she wrote on her MySpace blog Tuesday.

Jon Voight: Angelina Jolie Is My Hero

They may not be on speaking terms, but Jon Voight says he still looks up to his estranged daughter Angelina Jolie.

"People who raise children properly are heroes to me because it takes a lot of work," Voight, 69, told Us at the Hollywood premiere of Forgetting Sarah Marshall on Thursday. "And when they do it with joy and love, there's nothing more beautiful."

Of Jolie's charitable work, he told Us, "I think she's terrific. God bless her!"

Voight — who hasn’t spoken to his daughter since 2002 when he said that she had “severe emotional problems” during a TV interview — called her latest pregnancy "wonderful.

"I'm very excited, and I'm sending my love to the family," he told Us. "They're getting to be a bigger family — it's great!

Added Voight, "It's nice to see people embracing family and loving that whole process."

Exclusive! Three-Hour Lost Season Finale Over Two Nights!

It's official: Sources confirm to me exclusively that Steve McPherson has signed off on Lost's extraspecial 14th hour this season, which means Lost is getting a three-hour finale! The first hour airs May 15, the second and third hours will air May 29, beginning at 9 p.m. (ABC will still air the finales of Ugly Betty and Grey's Anatomy on May 22, as expected.)

Word is there are so many big reveals the producers wanted to deliver this season that they felt anything less than a full three-hour finale would have cheated the fans. In fact, I'm hearing that the writers' draft for the second half of the finale was mega_shok.gif pages long, which led all parties involved to realize these stories had to be told now. Anything else would have felt like a rip-off for the fans

Ousted 'Idol' Michael Johns Says: 'No Regrets, Mate'

He had never been in the bottom three before, but last night in an "American Idol" shocker, Aussie hottie MICHAEL JOHNS was eliminated from the search for the next singing sensation.

"I would be lying to say I wasn't shocked," he says the morning after the results show. "I hadn't been in the bottom three and I felt the last few weeks had been my strongest. But we are in this competition where anything can happen -- and it did!"

The 29-year-old also says he has no regrets about his decision to perform AEROSMITH's "Dream On," on a week when the rest of the Final 8 were performing ballads that many feel were more in line with the theme for the week: inspirational songs.

"I have never chosen a song based on what the competition is doing," Michael says. "I pick songs that mean something to me lyrically and emotionally. So singing 'Dream On' by Aerosmith with a 20-piece orchestra -- that is amazing."

Michael's tenure on "American Idol" didn't go unnoticed by two of his fellow Aussies -- KEITH URBAN and NICOLE KIDMAN. The two sent a message to him at an event he attended on Wednesday night after "Idol Gives Back," saying he was their favorite and that they watched every week

"It was great to hear," he admits. "Anytime you get to hear from two great Australians like that, I was very honored."

Michael's future plans include the upcoming summer tour, but he is hoping to have a record out sometime next year. Especially, since this morning, he has been hearing people compare him to CHRIS DAUGHTRY.

"Chris Daughtry is an amazing artist and a great guy," the ousted "Idol" contestant says. "I got to meet him a few times and everyone has nothing but good things to say about him. To be put in that category, I feel very fortunate."

As for the reports that felt that RYAN SEACREST was harsh in the way he broke the news to Michael that he was going home -- giving false hope for a moment, Michael says, "I get the TV aspect of this competition. It was tough. I thought, 'Okay, I am going home.' Then I thought, 'I am not going home. Maybe they are just having a good laugh.' I hadn't been in the bottom three before, so I was thinking that was a possibility. Ryan gave me a look as if to say, 'I am sorry I had to do that.' You are in this business and you get it, so I don't hold it against Ryan. After this, I will make a great record and it won't be the last you see of me."

Kanye Reflects on Mother's Death

In his own blog, KANYE WEST writes about his late mother and everything she taught him, saying, "I don't do anything I don't love anymore. While people chase money I pursue happiness. So many people talk about their investments or how much money they have but there's so many rich people who spend a lot of that trying 2 buy a piece of happiness. If there's anything my mom taught me is to enjoy life."

Kanye goes on to say that he has recorded for the first time in the last six months, saying he felt "good" and "inspired."

"The constant hours of creating helped me 2 keep from loosing my mind in a bad way," he says. "[Director] CHRIS MILK told me tragedy can produce great art and this is definitely true. I am a total mad man now, up till 3 a.m. every night, trying 2 fight pain, board-um, and uncertainty with creativity. All that said, life is good..."

Dr. Phil -- Screwed from the Bottom

TMZ has learned Dr. Phil's legal document wielding, cash-carrying, tough guy was not a supervising producer on the show. He was not an assistant producer. He was not a producer. He was not even close to being a producer. He was a production assistant. Think intern with a paycheck.

Here's the way it all went down: The good Doc's executive staff sent a seasoned producer down to Florida, along with a P.A. to chase the story of 8 teens who allegedly beat a classmate on tape. We're told the folks back home were horrified when they saw Mr. Large-and-In-Charge putting the smack down on local reporters after springing 17-year-old Mercades Nichols from the pokey. We're told execs on the show were pissed that the experienced producer allowed the P.A. to be in a position to embarrass the show in front of the cameras.

The bigger question -- who hatched the plan to pay the bail for the woman accused of kidnapping and videotaping the brutal beating? The show issued a statement saying certain staff members "went beyond their guidelines," but the buzz on the Paramount lot is that it would be impossible for the producer to pay the $3,300 for the bail and put up $33,000 in collateral without the full knowledge and approval of higher-ups on the show.

The plan could have been pulled off, but after the P.A. mouthed off publicly, Phil's battleship was sunk somewhere off the Florida coast.

We contacted Phil's people an hour ago, who responded by saying they "have no additional comment."

Matchbox 20 Won't Play Because of Some Bulls***

Matchbox 20 is canceling a show at Cheyenne Frontier Days -- which bills itself as the world's biggest outdoor rodeo -- over their newfound concern for the animals involved. Did they not know what a rodeo was?

Lead singer Rob Thomas and his wife, Marisol, posted this statement on the band's website: "We ask that (fans) please understand that it would be impossible for us to put ourselves in the position of making money from what we believe to be the mistreatment of animals."

But get this: the band is still scheduled to perform at the North Dakota State Fair -- which also includes rodeo events. They'll figure it out eventually.

'Desperate Housewives' rebuilds for the better

'Desperate Housewives': Teri Hatcher, Marcia Cross, Eva Longoria Parker, Felicity Huffman and Dana Delaney

As the fourth season resumes, the deadwood is gone on Wisteria Lane. In its place is a balance of whimsy and trauma not seen on the show since its first season.

By Jon Caramanica, Special to The Times
April 13, 2008

JUST before "Desperate Housewives" went on strike hiatus in January, there was a housecleaning, literally. A tornado ripped through Wisteria Lane, leveling some homes, ruining others and taking a good deal of bad karma with it.

The gruesome ######l fountain sculpture that had become a flash point for conversations about conformity? Gone. The mayor, Victor Lang (John Slattery), new husband to Gabrielle Solis (Eva Longoria Parker), who was still dabbling with her ex, Carlos (Ricardo Antonio Chavira)? Dead. A rapprochement between prim perfectionist Bree (Marcia Cross) and ascendant neighborhood disrupter Katherine (Dana Delany)? A frightening possibility.

As narrative strategy, the tornado was much like the fourth season of "Housewives" itself, which resumes tonight (ABC, 9) -- clearing out the deadwood and allowing new things to be discovered, or hidden. After two meandering seasons that prioritized spectacle over honest drama -- apologies to Alfre Woodard, who did what she could with awkward subject matter -- "Housewives" now feels as vital as it did during its first season. In its match of whimsy and trauma, there is no equal on network television.

Much of the thanks for this resurgence can be given to Delany's Katherine Mayfair, who's moved back to Wisteria after leaving several years before under dubious circumstances. Delany is sharp, vibrant and, most crucially, emotional, even if her character is meant to be essentially emotionless. Her hair, her eyes, her teeth -- every part of her comes together to connote terror lurking just beneath the surface. At her most sinister, she recalls Linda Fiorentino in "The Last Seduction," a sort of evil grace that not even Longoria or Nicollette Sheridan, as Edie, have ever hit.

Her addition to the cast has provided new opportunities for Bree, who bristles at the idea that someone on the block is better at hiding secrets than she is. (As Bree's husband, dentist Orson Hodge, Kyle MacLachlan draws upon his career-making role as Dale Cooper on David Lynch's "Twin Peaks" but seems to reimagine it through the lens of Whit Stillman.) At the beginning of the season, Bree saw Katherine as a target but has since positioned herself as a confidant. They'll be going into business together in the coming weeks.

With Bree and Katherine teamed, Wisteria's kinder souls should be looking over their shoulders. Bree's house was damaged in the tornado, and while it's being repaired, she and her family have moved in with the tragically kind Susan Mayer (Teri Hatcher). With her housecleaning and cooking, Bree has slowly seeped into Susan's family life, but Susan has other problems. Through a series of failed good deeds, she earned the ire of the new gay couple on the block, Bob (Tuc Watkins) and Lee (Kevin Rahm).

Up the block, Lynette Scavo (Felicity Huffman) has beaten her cancer, but being the good wife is thankless work on "Housewives."

Her cancer rendered Lynette a bit one-dimensional -- "cancer bitch" is how she described it to her husband, Tom (Doug Savant). As Bree and Katherine revel in their complex codependency, the other women of Wisteria run the risk of being marginalized.

For example, of the central characters, only Edie has truly suffered this season, whether from story-writing neglect or character exhaust. Her affair with Carlos, inexplicable from the get-go, concluded as he attempted to reconnect with Gabrielle. And can you blame him? The rest of the housewives shade their cruelty with flashes of genuineness (or vice versa), but Edie has become merely evil. Unlike everyone else on the block, it feels as if she's got absolutely nothing to hide. And on Wisteria, when that happens, it's time to go.

American Idol goes postal

American Idol is serious about raising money for charity, so as part of their "Idol Gives Back" initiative, they're releasing special-edition stamps featuring the past six winners and this year's winner. The limited-edition set of 20, which kicks off with first Idol Kelly Clarkson being featured, are sold for $19.99 (more than double the cost of regular stamps.) However, all proceeds benefit charity (save for the cost of the stamps) and AI producer Nigel Lythgoe says he hopes to generate $7 million through the sale of the stamps. "[It's] a great idea, especially for philatelists," says Nigel. "I think it's a little bit iconic, too. It's great for Idol."

On TV: Botox. Face-lifts. Reconstructive surgery.

WHAT'S GOING ON? Priscilla Presley, left, and Dolly Parton don't seem quite themselves.

I know we're all supposed to be watching this season of "Dancing With the Stars" to see whether professional athletics or Broadway provides a better foundation for dance. But I'm pretty sure most of us are far too preoccupied with figuring out whether Priscilla Presley has had the first successful head transplant and why there wasn't a "Frontline" or at least an E! special about it.

According to People magazine, she was treated by an unlicensed surgeon and is planning to undergo more surgery to correct it, which I cannot imagine is going to help.

Meanwhile, whenever the woman is on screen it is virtually impossible to look anywhere else -- at once puffy and yanked, her face, and its odd relationship to her neck, often takes on the dimensions of a Picasso painting. A finer mind would seize the opportunity and contemplate the larger issues of humanity -- the nature of identity, our denial of mortality, the tyranny of beauty. Me, I just sit there, open-mouthed, the same questions turning like a hamster wheel in my brain: What on earth did she do to herself? And why?

It is a question that arises with alarming frequency while watching television these days. Cosmetic surgery among performers is certainly not new; face-lifts, and the accompanying jokes, seemed the birthright of many of TV's pioneers. Joan Rivers has talked about her surgery so many times over the years that it's part of her IMDB listing, which probably explains why she has of late taken to the stage -- the light is so much more forgiving. Indeed plastic surgery is so ubiquitous, so acceptable, it has, ahem, carved out its own genre -- from reality makeover shows to FX's "Nip/Tuck," lipo, lifts, Botox and implants are as much a part of the cultural conversation as braces and contact lenses.

Except braces are temporary, contact lenses invisible and cosmetic surgery, well, it seems to have gotten out of hand. For a critic, this poses a dilemma -- while it is appropriate, indeed, necessary to point out technical things like disruptive camera work or shoddy set design, what exactly are you supposed to say about an older actor's strange shininess, newly bee-stung lips or eyes that seem to have changed shape and placement? Especially since no one in Hollywood but Joan, Dolly Parton, and Kathy Griffin owns up to having work done.

Google the name of almost any female actor older than 20 and the term "cosmetic surgery," and you will deluged with blogs and websites devoted to deconstructing famous faces and figures, often in the most clinical terms -- several of the sites are run, apparently, by actual surgeons who offer their expert analysis. But among those who are being analyzed, plastic surgery has become like gambling in Las Vegas -- a billion-dollar industry that no one admits to paying for.

So to avoid those angry denials through publicists, and to appear above the prole- tariat fixation with appearance, mostly we in the mainstream press say nothing. Or rather we say nothing in print and then run into our editor's office to say what everyone else across the country is saying: "Oh, my Lord, did you see what she did to her face?"

Me, I think it's time to come clean. If cosmetic surgery and other age-battling or appearance-altering procedures are part of the zeitgeist, then we need to figure out a way to discuss it critically without seeming like we are engaging in some form of gotcha.

Watching 78-year-old Barbara Walters, for example, her face painfully taut and shiny as she trailed through research facilities devoted to slowing down the aging process on "Live to 150? Can You Do It?" was an almost surreal experience, but what to say? Though Vanessa Williams recently gushed over the wonders of Botox on a Walters special, the famous interviewer has never made a similar admission.

When Carrie Fisher began popping up again last year -- as a divorce lawyer in "Weeds," as a crazy former TV writer on "30 Rock" -- we were all so glad to see her working again, no one quite had the heart to mention that her face was so changed you had to hit the rewind button a few times to make sure it was her. And, mercifully, the short-lived "Viva Laughlin" was so all-around bad that no one felt obligated to dwell on, or even mention, the much-speculated-upon changes to Melanie Griffith's visage.

It's impossible to know what exactly has happened in each case -- age, genetics, hard living, bad lighting, good lighting, Botox or plastic surgery. Whatever, it's the new -- and wrinkle-free! -- elephant in the living room. Despite a tacit understanding that actors nowadays start lifting and injecting on their 21st birthday, mentioning an inexplicable altered appearance remains strangely taboo.

It's a tough town

BEFORE I go any further, let me be clear: I begrudge no woman, or man, any surgical or chemical enhancements. At this point, I've just about given up on even trying to keep track of psycho weight loss or breast implants among actors -- remember watching various women of "Friends" and "Ally McBeal" shrink to identical size zeros right before our very eyes? Whatever. That's Hollywood. If you want to publicly starve to death or, in the case of the cast of "The Sopranos," risk collective congestive heart failure, that's your business.

People should be free to look as they choose, and this town is tough on women -- don't talk to me about Judi Dench and Helen Mirren, they're British. Would an American woman ever get away with anything approaching Nicolas Cage's hair or James Spader's increasing portliness? Of course not.

But television is a visual art, and if people are going to significantly alter the way they look in ways not directly connected with the roles they are playing, it can affect not only their performance but the whole ###### of the show.

So you tell me, what is a critic supposed to say when part of the problem with a show is that the leading lady's face seems incapable of movement or her eyes appear to be moving toward the sides of her head or her lips just look weird?

Reviewing many of the new shows for the past fall season and midseason replacements, I noticed at least three fairly famous faces that looked decidedly, and distractingly, different, frozen or tugged into almost immobility that made certain emotional scenes almost laughable.

Did I mention this in my reviews? No, I did not, even though I felt whatever procedure had been done clearly presented dramatic problems. I didn't because none of these women has publicly acknowledged anything more drastic than facials, and I thought that to suggest that these women looked shiny, injected or just "off" would be mean and possibly sexist.

If women look old, we criticize, and if they try to fix it, we criticize more snidely. Frankly, I don't care if an actor wants to yank the whole epidermis up with Scotch tape and baling wire as long as he or she looks human and is still able to act. Unfortunately, unless you are Catherine Deneuve, you can't act if your face is petrified. Which is why I won't even watch "Desperate Housewives" anymore -- I live in fear of the day Felicity Huffman succumbs to whatever package paralysis deal they've got going on over there.

What normal looks like

ACTUALLY, the Wisteria Lane ladies may be a fine example of art imitating life. Nicollette Sheridan has repeatedly denied facial surgery, Teri Hatcher has both admitted and denied Botox, and Marcia Cross remains silent. But even if they had a plastic surgeon on set, it would work for the hyper-reality of the characters -- neurotic women in a constant state of sexual upset are not expected to age gracefully.

What, however, are we to make of all the young women and their already-mutating dimensions? Lara Flynn Boyle was virtually unrecognizable on a recent "Law & Order" -- though it is to be hoped that the rounder face is because of weight gain (no one puts on pounds in their lips) and she's too young to be worrying about wrinkles.

Which isn't to say there isn't public outcry. For years, we've all rooted for Jennifer Aniston even as she gradually whittled down her nose along with the rest of her body. But poor old Ashley Tisdale got whaled on in the press for a similar "deviated septum repair." Maybe because she's a Disney girl, and people fear she's too young to have heard of Jennifer Grey, whose nose job so famously derailed her career that she parodied herself in the 1999 show "It's Like, You Know."

If TV critics are mostly mute on the subject, the blogosphere is not. Outing cosmetic sur- gery seems to be one of the reasons the Internet was invented, but in a way, it's a zero-sum game. For one thing, you have to figure that surgically enhanced stars are like adulterous politicians -- for every one who gets outed, there are three more quietly passing. And what does it matter, except when it affects the person's performance?

But when we see bad things happen to good faces, when cosmetic decisions interfere with performances, I think we need to speak out. Otherwise the younger generation will think that a fish-mouth smile and those shiny cheeks are normal and that the Posh Beckham look is something to aspire to.

For me, I wish everyone would stop not only because the sight of some ill-advised surgery or injection can wreck a perfectly OK television show, but also because I am afraid we will forget what normal looks like. Whenever I see women like Angela Lansbury or the late Geraldine Page or Marion Ross, I am filled with gratitude. Not just for the nature of their talent but because their faces always remained precisely and gloriously their faces.

Now, of course, someone will e-mail me with details of all their cosmetic surgeries and I'll have to shoot myself in the head . . . but I'll do it with Botox, because these smile lines are really becoming pronounced and someone might ask me to go on television.
