Lawyer: A-Rod and Madonna Had 'An Affair of the Heart'

Alex Rodriguez's relationship with Madonna was "an affair of the heart" – not "sexual infidelity" – according to Cynthia Rodriguez's lawyer.

Still, the baseball star's relationship with the singer "was the last straw" before the Yankee slugger's wife filed for divorce Monday, her Houston attorney, Earle Lilly, tells PEOPLE.

Lilly says that A-Rod was smitten with Madonna, but makes no claim of any sexual liaison. "The correct analysis is a relationship," he says. "Some people categorize an affair as something as sexual infidelity. We're not claming that. It's an affair of the heart."

Over the weekend, Madonna issued a statement to PEOPLE denying a romantic relationship with the baseball star, saying, "I have nothing to do with the state of his marriage."

In fact, "Madonna's name is not even mentioned in the papers," says Lilly. "We don't want the public to think this is an aggressive action against Madonna."

Still, Lilly maintains that A-Rod has behaved badly for "a good while" and his client, Cynthia Rodriguez, has had enough. "She's just a Greek Orthodox lady who has had as much as she can take," he says.

Shortly before 9 a.m. Monday, Cynthia's Miami attorney Maurice Kutner filed the divorce petition.

"This is an action for dissolution of marriage, which is being filed only after [Cynthia Rodriguez] has exhausted every effort to salvage the marriage of the parties," the document reads. "However, Alex has emotionally abandoned his wife and children and has left her with no choice but to divorce him."

Without naming any names, the document states, "The marriage of the parties is irretrievably broken because of the husband's extramarital affairs and other marital misconduct."

The couple were married Nov. 2, 2002 in Dallas. They have two daughters, Natasha, 3, and Ella, 2 months.

Both Lilly and Kutner maintain that their client hopes to settle the divorce as amicably as possible.

"Cynthia has made it very clear to me that she wants to take the high road and protect her children and herself," Kutner said shortly after filing the papers. "She wants to resolve the issues between Alex and herself in an amicable fashion."

A lawyer reportedly representing Alex Rodriguez did not immediately return calls for comment.

Kevin Costner: Playing Music for My Son Is 'Magic'

Surprise! Thousands of NASCAR fans who turned up for Saturday's Coke Zero 400 were shocked to realize that the lively country-rock band playing featured a familiar face: Kevin Costner on lead vocals.

"There were double-takes," he said after the show at the Daytona International Speedway. "They get into the music without knowing."

The actor – dressed in faded jeans, sunglasses and white button-down with rolled-up sleeves – and his band Modern West played a 50-minute set of mostly original songs, capped off by a lively rendition of Bob Dylan's "Mr. Tambourine Man."

Lily Allen Is ‘Scared’ of Her New Sound

A usually cheeky Lily Allen showed her less confident side recently in Los Angeles when talking about her skills as a musician.

“I left school at 15. I’m not a genius songwriter. I don’t think I’m really good at anything,” Allen told the U.K. version of Rolling Stone, adding that she feels that she “got away with something.”

Fears aside, Allen’s sophomore album is nearing the wrapping stages and it’s going to make listeners feel "naughty."

Her upcoming album is tentatively titled Stuck on the Naughty Step. The British phrase “sit on the naughty step” can be likened to the American “go stand in the corner.” The 23-year-old singer says this album will have a more electropop feel than the ska vibe of her last effort Alright, Still. She’ll even play xylophone on the track “Everybody’s At It,” a ditty about prescription drug use.

Allen says she is “really scared” about how her fans will perceive her record. “Some people will like it and some people won’t,” Allen says. “If people hate it, then I’ll just try something else.”

No Stage Comeback for ABBA

Desperate for an ABBA comeback tour? Don't hold your breath.

Despite a momentous reunion on the red carpet for the Swedish premiere of the Mamma Mia! movie, one founding member of the iconic '70s group vowed that the band's performing days are over – forever.

"We will never appear on stage again," Björn Ulvaeus, 63, said in an interview with the U.K.'s Sunday Telegraph. "There is simply no motivation to regroup. Money is not a factor and we would like people to remember us as we were. Young, exuberant, full of energy and ambition."

Sounds like fans will have to make do with the new film, which stars Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan and Colin Firth and features 22 of the band's signature songs.

"Meryl Streep is a goddess," Ulvaeus says. "To hear her delivering the songs with all the emotion we put in the lyrics is more than we could have dreamed of."

Jessica Alba Ponders 'Laid-Back' Motherhood

New mom Jessica Alba gave birth to her first child, Honor Marie Warren, last month. Now she's carefully considering how she and husband Cash Warren will influence their daughter.

"Kids' personalities have so much to do with the parents and their mentality," the 27-year-old tells Britain's Sunday Express for their S Magazine. "If you're very paranoid and uptight and won't let your child cross the street, they are going to take on that anxiety. If you're a little more laid-back and make your kids responsible for their actions, you'll probably have an easier time with them. I guess I'll find out."

The actress has also been studying up on children's health issues.

"I've been reading a lot about kids and infections, autism and vaccinations," adds Alba, who suffered from health problems as a child. "I've come to think that perhaps I was a product of my environment or the vaccines or something my mother took when she was pregnant."

Already, Alba finds that her own eating habits have drastically changed.

"I used to be a just a coffee for breakfast, yogurt for lunch girl," she tells the magazine. "Now I have to have something every couple of hours. I turn into Satan if I don't eat."

Uma Thurman: Engaged Life Is 'Wonderful'

Uma Thurman is learning never say never – at least when it comes to wedding vows.

After her two divorces from actors Gary Oldman and Ethan Hawke, the Kill Bill star swore she'd never marry again. But now, in her first interview since her engagement to Swiss multimillionaire Arpad "Arki" Busson was announced, Thurman tells the U.K.'s Sunday Times Style magazine that she's happy to go back on her word.

"I'm going to have to retract my statement of never," she says. "I'll have to eat my words – what a surprise."

Thurman, who says "personally, things are wonderful," also showed off her stunning engagement ring (which is reported to be an 8-plus carat center diamond surrounded by 20 smaller stones). It's so big, the article says, her hand can "barely get through the sleeve of her coat."

With her personal life going well, the 38-year-old actress also says she's happy to "look my age."

"Being in my late thirties is fine with me. Maybe when 40 hits, the penny will drop and you just hate life. But so far, so good."

Madonna's Bro Sets Date with GMA

Casting Couch: Osbournes Return; Spike Tunes Up; 90210 Expands

Maybe it's time for Black Sabbath devotees to renounce their fanhood: Ozzy Osbourne is moving into Osmond territory.

According to Variety, Fox has given a six-episode pickup to an hour-long variety show hosted by the 59-year-old erstwhile Prince of F--king Darkness, 55-year-old wife Sharon, 23-year-old son Jack and 22-year-old daughter Kelly, that's said to be a throwback to such programs of yore as—gulp—ABC's Donny and Marie and CBS' The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour.

The untitled Osbourne project is being overseen by James Sunderland, the executive producer of NBC's America's Got Talent, on which the family matriarch serves as a judge.

Unlike their heady days on The Osbournes, the reality show that ran from 2002 to 2005 on MTV and earned the family Emmys, the new format will attempt to mix musical guests, comedy skits and game-show segments with in-studio audience participation and man-on-the-street-style bits.

One idea being bandied about, per the trade, is a segment titled "The Osbournes Meet the Osbournes," in which the heavy ######l clan hang out with another Osbourne family.

The show will be shot in Los Angeles and Fox aims to kick things off with a Christmas special.

Speaking of variety, Spike Lee—who's tackled all sorts of genres on the screen—is reportedly headed for the Great White Way.

The Oscar-nominated helmer plans to film three performances of the Broadway musical Passing Strange for a future broadcast on a cable network.

Lee will record two of the black-themed production's shows in front of audiences and a third without. No word when shooting will get under way, but Passing Strange, about a young black musician on a spiritual journey to Amsterdam and Berlin, could use the added television exposure.

Even though it won a Tony for Best Book last month, the musical has played to half-empty houses and seen its ticket sales slip from $300,000 a week to $245,000 for the week ended June 29.

Meanwhile, in other casting news:

* Per the Hollywood Reporter, Robert Duvall will direct and star in The Line, a four-hour Showtime miniseries about life on the American-Mexican border. The Oscar winner will play a Department of Agriculture "tick rider" who patrols the border for pests and accidentally becomes a target for Mexican drug lords, Mexican police, the FBI and Texas Rangers.

* Meghan Markle and Kellan Lutz have been added to the cast of the CW's upcoming Beverly Hills, 90210 spinoff, simply titled 90210. The former will play Wendy, a sexy student who uses her looks to get what she wants, while the latter will fill the role of George Evans, a star lacrosse player who hails from a wealthy family.

* The Shield's Jay Karnes has been tapped for a recurring role on FX's new dramatic series Sons of Anarchy, about a vigilante outlaw motorcycle gang's attempts to protect a small California town from predatory corporate developers and drug pushers. Karnes will essay the part of an ATF agent.

Eva Mendes Plays Coy on Rehab Details

Mendes actually feels better when stories are wrong rather right...

I mean, I was into New Kids on the Block, just like Drew! Actually, I shouldn't say that. I don't know if she was. I'm going to text her on that one."

A-Rod's Mystery Doc & Madonna's Missing Prenup

With all this gossip about Madonna's marriage and A-Rod's divorce, I need a translator. What the heck is this antenuptial agreement A-Rod has? And does Madonna have one? Does she even have a prenup?
—Murray, Pelham, N.Y.

You will not believe the answers I'm about to give you. They're so mind-blowing I don't think I can share it here on the front page. Your corneas may explode. Do me a solid and follow me into the jump, so's we can protect children and elderlies with weak or sensitive eyeballs.

The definition of antenuptial agreement is...the same as a prenup. Only a different word. Really.

"It's just an old-fashioned way of saying it," confirms celebrity divorce attorney Goldie Schon, whose firm handled the infamous Barry Bonds divorce.

But that's not the cornea-blowing portion of our program. This part is: According to reports, Madonna has no prenuptial agreement with Guy Ritchie.

At all. If her feverish denials turn out to be false, and she and Ritchie are in fact headed for a divorce, she'll be naked to the world, vulnerable in the eyes of family law. Ritchie could end up with quite a pot of dough.

"The issue would be what she was worth at the time she got married, and what she is worth now," says Schon, who is familiar with the British laws that would most likely apply to Madonna and Ritchie. Ritchie would theoretically be entitled not to half of Madonna's entire fortune—estimated at $600 million—but half of the whatever increase in fortune Madonna made during the length of the marriage.

In other words, if Madonna's worth grew by $50 million between 2000, when she married Ritchie in a Scottish castle, and now, Ritchie might be able to get $25 million, if there is, in fact, no prenup.

In not having one, Madonna has set herself apart from most of her fellows in the Legend Community.

"My guess is that upwards of 70 percent of celebrities have them," Schon says. "I was surprised when I read reports she doesn't have one."

Among the celeb couples who have signed prenups: Catherine Zeta-Jones and Michael Douglas, Russell Crowe and wife Danielle Spencer, TomKat, and Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban.

Now, go put some ice on your eyeballs.

Vanessa Hudgens: I’m a Hopeless Romantic

Zac and Vanessa, aka Zanessa, were openly affectionate on the set of High School Musical 3: Senior Year, from wrapping their arms around each other to splitting a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

Madonna Asks Britney To Get ‘Sticky & Sweet’

It’s official! Madonna and Britney Spears have teamed up to work together again. Britney’s longtime manager Larry Rudolph tells Access Hollywood that Madonna has asked Britney to appear on her upcoming Sticky & Sweet World Tour and Britney has agreed. But, Brit’s appearance will only take place on video and not in person … which is just fine by me. If handled properly, I think this collabo is going to kick all ass:

The last time Madonna and Britney Spears shared a stage together, the pop stars locked lips at the 2003 MTV Video Music Awards in a kiss that shocked and delighted their fans. But now, Access Hollywood has learned the music powerhouses will once again share the stage in Madonna’s upcoming “Sticky & Sweet” world tour — though not exactly live. Despite rumors that Brit would join Madge onstage, the blonde duo will appear together, but only through a taped video performance, Access has confirmed. “Britney’s doing a video piece this week for Madonna’s new tour,” Brit’s manager, Larry Rudolph, told Access. The duo filmed a portion of the video Sunday that will be used during the concert, a rep for Madonna said. “Britney shot some footage with Madonna yesterday that will be used during Madonna’s upcoming tour,” the Material Mom’s rep, Liz Rosenberg, confirmed to Access. As for a surprise appearance by Brit on stage alongside Madonna, fans should not hold their breath, according the rep. “I do not believe that Britney will be appearing live on the tour,” she added.

Wow! This is great, if surprising, news. I was sure that Maddy would never work with Britney again after the way things went down the last time they collaborated (after Britney started talkin’ shizz about Kabbalah). It seems as if bygones are, in fact, bygones. What I’m not sure about is where this taped performance took place. Did Britney fly off to NYC to shoot the performance with Madonna or did she tape her portion here in SoCal? As much as I don’t want to be spoiled with tour deets before I see the show, I’m really dying to know what this collabo entails. Since Britney is doing Madonna the favor for her tour, I wonder if Brit is going to ask Madge to return the favor and appear on her next album … could there be another Me Against the Music in our future? This is all great news … and what a great way to deflect the Madonna talk from divorce and back to her tour.

Lindsay Lohan’s Quiet Weekend

After celebrating her 22nd birthday with her 50 most intimate friends at her prom-themed birthday party last week, Lindsay Lohan spent the rest of her weekend enjoying the quiet pleasures of SoCal with an even smaller group of intimate friends, including her younger brother and sister Michael and Ali Lohan. Here are a few pics of Lindsay and her BFF Samantha Ronson picking up a few DVDs from their friendly neighborhood Blockbuster Video over the weekend, presumably for a quiet night in with friends:

You will note that the girls picked up the straight-to-video movie Get a Clue which stars none other than Lindsay Lohan herself … clearly, it was the better choice than, say, her last movie I Know Who Killed Me which was pretty wretched. To get the weekend started right, tho, Lindsay packed up a few friends, her sister Ali, her brother Michael and his girlfriend and spent the day at Disneyland:

Lindsay Lohan rang in her 22nd birthday with a playful date at Disneyland with girlfriend Samantha Ronson. The pair took their romance to new heights, piling in for a ride on a Alice In Wonderland themed roller coaster … By yesterday, the couple were in the mood for a quite night in, stopping off to collect a DVD at their local Blockbusters. After broswing through the shelves, the bemused pair settled on renting one of Lindsay’s straight to DVD movies, Get a Clue, as well as Pirate Of The Caribbean.

I don’t care what anyone says about Lindsay these days, I love that she is able to keep her life free from dangerous drama and can, in fact, live a normal life free of hazardous decisions. As long as she surrounds herself with her family and her closest friends, the ones who really care about her, she should be able to continue moving forward in a happy and positive way. If the most “exciting” thing that Lindsay is doing these days is riding the tea cups at Disneyland then I’m all for it. I’m proud of her progress and I hope she keeps saying no to the bad influences and yes to living a life worth living.

UPDATE: Brother: Madonna Kissed Actress Gwyneth Paltrow on the Lips

Apparently, Britney Spears isn't the only A-lister Madonna has smooched.

In his upcoming unauthorized autobiography Life With My Sister Madonna, her brother Christopher Ciccone claims the singer, 49, planted a steamy kiss on BFF Gwyneth Paltrow.

According to an excerpt in British tabloid The Sun, Ciccone writes that Madonna was at a New Year's Eve bash for designer Donatella Versace.

She was dancing on a table at 4 a.m. when she allegedly grabbed Paltrow, 35, pulled her face to hers and kissed her.

Partygoers, Ciccone says, were shocked.

The same sex kiss is among the bombshells Ciccone claims to reveal in the book.

He also writes that Madonna's rocky marriage to Guy Ritchie has survived because of Rabbi Yehuda Berg who has served as a mediator.

Now, reports claim that A-Rod actually has a separate apartment that his soon to be ex-wife Cynthia doesn’t even know about.

According to the reports, Alex has been subletting the place for the last several months. The apartment is located about six blocks away from Madonna’s NYC pad.

The apartment is owned by a business man who seems to sublet it for short periods of time to wealthy clients.

A doorman at the building did say that Madonna has been a frequent visitor there.

What?

We’re not too sure if we believe that.

The doorman continues, “I think she has someone up there. Like a manager.”

Madonna’s manager, Guy Oseary, lives in Los Angeles.

We're inclined to believe Madge on this on. Her marriage may (or may not) be crumbling, but we doubt she's been screwing A-Rod.

What do U think is going on?

Actor vs. Actors

Old Hollywood is speaking up and Robert De Niro is the latest to speak out about the potential actors' strike due to their negotiations of new contracts.

While at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival in the Czech Republic, where he won the Crystal Globe for his contribution to cinema, the actor spoke about his concerns.

De Niro said, "I do not think it is a good time to be striking," adding that in the years to come the issues "could be resolved."

He also added that the general climate didn't seem right for the action.

Saying, "All the trade unions are affected by the strike. With the economy as it is at this time, it does not seem to be a great idea."

The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) had come up with a three-year deal originally but the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) had said the deal didn't look promising.

Negotiations are still ongoing but SAG is expected to respond to a new offer this Monday.

We're on SAG's side. The big media moguls need to step up to the plate - especially when it comes to the issue of payment for DVD residuals (or lack thereof)!

Annie: 'The Freakin Sun Will Come Out Today If It Kills Me!'

They say the best way to get over heartbreak is to throw yourself into work, and that appears to be exactly what Anne Hathaway is doing. The permagrin clad actress is currently in Rome promoting "Get Smart," which has got to be tough considering the brouhaha going on in her personal life.

I give her mucho credit, but I have to wonder if the "so happy it hurts" smile is a case of genuine bemusement from being in Rome and having fun with Steve Carrell or symptoms associated with Tears of a Clown disease.

In any case, stay strong girl. Find your inner Miranda Priestly and run with it.

He Needs To Stay In Jail

Some people never learn!

Amy Winehouse's husband, Blake Incarcerated, has been caught doing drugs in prison.

Click here to see the shocking new photos of the junkie smoking heroin from his cell.

A prison source said: “Blake takes heroin whenever he can get hold of it. His claims to be clean are a fallacy and it is obvious he remains dependent. There is nothing to suggest he won’t carry on when he’s outside and back with Amy. If she takes him back into her life when she is trying to get clean it will be a recipe for disaster.”

If and when Blake is released, though, it will likely only be a matter of weeks before he's back in jail.

How come Amy's not in prison yet either???

Jack Black: Grooming Guru?

When you think of Jack Black, skincare isn't the first thing that jumps to mind. Bulging bellies, unkempt locks, eating a plate of nachos in one bite because if they're connected it counts as one? Sure, but grooming god? Not.

That's why Jack Black Skin Care for Men didn't make sense. Until I found out that he has nothing to do with it. "I'm not happy," Jack said. "I haven't pursued legal action, but it's bull****."

The companies name doesn't appear to have been inspired by the funnyman (Jack Black Skin Care for Men was created in 2000 when Jack was just breaking out in films like "High Fidelity") but its Jack Black Beard Lube does sound unintentionally comical.

But at the end of the day, Jack the actor is right: "Here's the thing - I'm hurting their business. Who would actually want to buy my body cream? Who says, 'How do I get skin as smooth and silky as Jack Black's?'"

Selma Blair is How Old?

Am I alone in being totally caught off guard that Selma Blair is 36 years old? I would have bought her being 31, maybe even 33, but 36? Jaw, meet floor.

So tell us, Selma, what's your secret to eternal youth? Bathing in the blood of nubile virgins? Drinking yalang yalang by the gallon? Maybe it's that you're not married and don't have children.

In either case, happy (belated) birthday! In honor of your special day I will watch my favorite Selma Blair movie: "The Sweetest Thing!"

Come on, let's all sing "I Don't Wanna Miss A Thing" in her honor!

Celine Dion The Movie. Seriously.

Click to watch

So the other night I was just having a quiet night in when I stumbled on a movie that was so terrible, so horrible, so very bad that I simply couldn't stop watching it. It was called "Céline" and it was the unauthorized biography of Celine Dion's life. And it was fab-u-lous.

First of all, at no point does "Celine" speak with a French-Canadian accent, which just shows how unimportant the details are for this film and part of what makes it so amazingly painful to watch. The movie charts the singer's rise to fame, but only truly gets good in the last 45 minutes that chronicles her transition from child star to the diva we know her as today.

The film claims that Celine aggressively (like really aggressively) romantically pursued René Angélil and that she didn't want to sing "My Heart Will Go On." Blasphemy!

The girl playing Celine, Christine Ghawi, does a decent enough job, but she always seems like a teenager and must be from New Yawk or Joisey because she let's out a "Ma!" at one point that couldn't sound less like Celine. Oh, and in sadder news, Enrico Colantoni, who I loved so much on "Veronica Mars," plays Rene. Also without an accent. Also super strange.

The one truly bad part, well it's all kind of bad, but the one disappointing part is that none of Celine's original recordings are used in the film, most likely because she wasn't cooperating with this production. Understandably so, therefore some random Celine-copycat takes the mic. But like Celine always says, "I yam the greatest sing-ah in da world" and this movie only proves it! Below is the trailer: watch, mock, love.

The Dark Knight

Christian Bale (Batman) and Heath Ledger (Joker) star in director Christopher Nolan's exillerating follow-up to 'Batman Begins.'

Having memorably explored the Caped Crusader’s origins in “Batman Begins,” director Christopher Nolan puts all of Gotham City under a microscope in “The Dark Knight,” the enthralling second installment of his bold, bracing and altogether heroic reinvention of the iconic franchise. An ambitious, full-bodied crime epic of gratifying scope and moral complexity, this is seriously brainy pop entertainment that satisfies every expectation raised by its hit predecessor and then some. That should also hold true at the box office, with Heath Ledger’s justly anticipated turn as the Joker adding to the must-see excitement surrounding the Warner Bros. release.

With the Bruce Wayne/Batman backstory firmly established, “The Dark Knight” fans out to take a broader perspective on Gotham City -- portrayed as a seething cauldron of interlocking power structures and criminal factions in the densely layered but remarkably fleet screenplay by helmer Nolan and brother Jonathan (stepping in for “Batman Begins’” David S. Goyer, who gets a story credit).

Using five strongly developed characters to anchor a drama with life-or-death implications for the entire metropolis, the Nolans have taken Bob Kane’s comicbook template and crafted an anguished, eloquent meditation on ideas of justice and power, corruption and anarchy and, of course, the need for heroes like Batman -- a question never in doubt for the viewer, but one posed rather often by the citizens of Gotham.

Indeed, with trusty Lt. Jim Gordon (Gary Oldman, superbly restrained) and golden-boy District Attorney Harvey Dent (a cocksure Aaron Eckhart) successfully spearheading the city’s crackdown on the mob, even Wayne himself (Christian Bale) figures his nights moonlighting as a leather-clad vigilante are numbered. The young billionaire hopes to hang up the Batsuit for good and renew his relationship with assistant D.A. Rachel Dawes (Maggie Gyllenhaal, an immediate improvement over Katie Holmes), who has taken up with Dent in the meantime.

But Batman’s stature as a radical symbol of good has invited a more sinister criminal presence to Gotham City -- and, as seen in the crackerjack bank-robbery sequence that opens the pic, one who operates in terrifyingly unpredictable ways. Utterly indifferent to simple criminal motivations like greed, Ledger’s maniacally murderous Joker is as pure an embodiment of irrational evil as any in modern movies. He’s a pitiless psychopath who revels in chaos and fears neither pain nor death, a demonic prankster for whom all the world’s a punchline.

After Ledger’s death in January, his penultimate performance (with Terry Gilliam’s “The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus” still to come) will be viewed with both tremendous excitement and unavoidable sadness. It’s a tribute to Ledger’s indelible work that he makes the viewer entirely forget the actor behind the cracked white makeup and blood-red rictus grin, so complete and frightening is his immersion in the role. With all due respect to the enjoyable camp buffoonery of past Jokers like Cesar Romero and Jack Nicholson, Ledger makes them look like -- well, clowns.

The pic shrewdly positions the Joker as the superhero-movie equivalent of a modern terrorist (one of several post-9/11 signifiers), who threatens to target Gotham civilians until Batman reveals his identity. Batman, Gordon and Dent uneasily join forces, but the Joker seems to have the upper hand at every step, even from a jail cell; the city, turning against the hero it once looked to for hope, seems more fractious, vulnerable and dangerous than ever.

Though more linear than “Memento” and “The Prestige” (both also co-scripted by the Nolans), “The Dark Knight” pivots with similar ingenuity on a breathless series of twists and turns, culminating in a dramatic shift for Dent. This subplot reps the film’s weakest link, packing too much psychological motivation into too little screen time to be entirely credible. Yet Eckhart vividly inhabits the character’s sad trajectory, underscoring the film’s point that symbols of good can be all too easily tarnished.

From Wayne’s playful debates with faithful butler Alfred (Michael Caine) about the public perception of Batman to the Joker’s borderline-poetic musings on his own bottomless sadism, the characters almost seem to be carrying on a debate about the complicated realities of good vs. evil, and the heavy burden shouldered by those fighting for good. One of the few action filmmakers who’s capable of satisfying audiences beyond the fanboy set, Nolan honors his serious themes to the end; he bravely closes the story with both Gotham City and the narrative in tatters, making this the rare sequel that genuinely deserves another.

Viewers who found “Batman Begins” too existentially weighty for its own good will be refreshed to know that “The Dark Knight” hits the ground running and rarely lets up over its swift 2½-hour running time. Nolan directs the action more confidently than he did the first time out, orchestrating all manner of vertiginous mid-air escapes and virtuosic highway setpieces (and unleashing Batman’s latest ooh-ah contraption, the monster-truck-tire-equipped Bat-Pod). In a fresh innovation, six sequences were shot using Imax cameras, and will presumably look smashing in the giant-screen format (pic was reviewed from a 35mm print).

Though not as obsessively detailed as “Batman Begins,” “The Dark Knight” shares with that film a robust physicality and a commitment to taking violence seriously; a brief shot of bruises and scrapes on Bale’s torso conveys as much impact as any of the film’s brutal confrontations. Bale himself is less central figure than ensemble player, but the commandingly charismatic thesp continues to put his definitive stamp on the role, and also has devilish fun playing up Wayne’s playboy persona.

Tech work is at the first entry’s high standard, with many artists reprising their contributions here -- from Nathan Crowley’s imposing production design, shown to flattering effect in Wally Pfister’s gleaming widescreen compositions, to the propulsively moody score by Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard. Perhaps most impressive is Lee Smith’s editing, confidently handling multiple lines of action and cutting for maximum impact.

Exteriors were lensed in Chicago aside from an early, plot-necessitated detour to Hong Kong, which marks the first time in a Batman film that the title character has left Gotham City.

Mamma Mia! The Movie

Pierce Brosnan (left) and Meryl Streep star in Phyllida Lloyd's film adaptation of the ABBA musical, 'Mamma Mia!'

"Take a Chance on Me" may be one of its most celebrated songs, but little risk is actually involved in "Mamma Mia! The Movie," a predictably glossy screen adaptation of the Abba-scored musical. The pic uses virtually the same creative team behind the stage original -- topped by helmer Phyllida Lloyd, making her film bow -- but subs in bigscreen names like Meryl Streep and Pierce Brosnan for the leads and adds lush Greek exteriors. But the island-set tale of a young bride-to-be looking for dad offers little else that differs from the stage version and, since its grosses have exceeded $2 billion, why should it? To borrow another song title, Universal should reap reasonable "Money, Money, Money" in all territories.

The tuner shares a basic plot with the lesser-known 1968 Gina Lollobrigida starrer "Buona Sera, Mrs. Campbell," so offers a variation of the recent screen-to-stage-to-screen-again works as "The Producers" and "Hairspray." Another difference is the highly lucrative addition of a soundtrack featuring several No. 1 hits by one of the most profitable music acts in history. With each song inserted to capture a certain moment or emotion in the script, and with the script itself stretched to encompass enough songs to fit the perfect best-of compilation, the storyline plays out more like an oversized Abba promotional vehicle than a fully dramatic piece.

The opening scenes offer a preview of the over-polished, glitzy texture used throughout, as a series of moonlit postcard images introduce us to the Greek island where Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) is set to marry heartthrob Sky (Dominic Cooper).

Having never known the identity of her father, Sophie decides to invite three suspects -- suave architect divorcee Sam (Pierce Brosnan), lonely but loaded investment banker Harry (Colin Firth), and roughshod world traveler Bill (Stellan Skarsgard). But Sophie doesn't give warning to her ex-swinger mother Donna (Meryl Streep), who now runs a bed and breakfast atop the island.

Quid pro quo plays on for much of the pic's first half, as the slightly bitter Donna -- accompanied by zany friends Rosie (Julie Walters) and Tanya (Christine Baranski) -- attends to wedding preparations while reminiscing about the good old days when her trio, Donna and the Dynamos, rocked the scene. Meanwhile, Sophie plays an unending game of "My Three Dads" as she hops from one protective fatherly embrace to the other, unable to determine who's the real one, and unwilling to confess her hidden agenda to Mom.

A prolonged, dance-heavy centerpiece features simultaneous bachelor and bachelorette parties where the entire cast, and all the subplots (including Donna's re-emerging interest in Sam), converge in the type of chorus-line bonanza usually timed to wrap the first act with a bang. Yet on film, the scenes play more like "MTV Grind" than Busby Berkeley, with a roving camera breaking up the action into fast-cut singles.

The final reels are devoted to the wedding, set atop a dreamy seaside cliff (covered in one too many helicopter shots). After the truth is revealed, in what amounts to the film's lengthiest dialogue sequence, the music kicks in for an extended showstopping finale that runs tirelessly through the stretched-out closing credits.

The singing-and-dancing work for the basic excitement and energy of a live performance, butan additional boost of cinematic prowess is needed to sustain a similar rhythm on film. Scribe-creator Catherine Johnson (also in her first screen outing) and theater-opera vet Lloyd can't seem to find the right ###### or style for their globally celebrated material.

Most of the chorus dance numbers -- especially "Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!" and "Voulez-vous" -- feel over-shot and over-cut, never allowing for the pleasure of a sustained, well-choreographed performance. Other, more intimate songs -- including the beach-set "Lay All Your Love On Me" and the cliff-set "The Winner Takes It All" -- feature a twirling Steadicam that does a better job of depicting the gorgeous coastline than the lip-synching cast.

Thesping is all-around pro, although some stars, especially the bouncy and rejuvenated Streep, seem better suited for musical comedy than others, including Brosnan and Skarsgard.

Despite the obvious time and energy devoted to smooth transitioning between studio and location scenes (both are shot realistically yet theatrically by d.p. Haris Zambarloukos), tech work often feels more rushed than mastered. Poor dubbing in some of the outdoor sequences tends to take away from the filmmakers' insistence that we're actually there.

Matthew McConaughey: It's a Boy!

Matthew McConaughey is a proud new pop. (Although someone should probably tell him that all new babies arrive wearing no shirt.)

The ab-fab actor and his girlfriend, Brazilian model Camila Alves, welcomed a 7-pound, 4-ounce boy, their first child together, Monday evening, E! News confirms.

The youngster was born at 6:44 p.m., according to McConaughey's rep.

But while this may cut into the Texan's time for sojourns to Nicaragua and lazy days on the beach with Lance, the Sahara star sounds more than ready to embrace daddyhood.

"A healthy baby boy was born," McConaughey said tonight in a statement to OK! magazine.

"Camila and I were side by side the entire time. We are both tired and elated, and are so happy to have created the greatest miracle in the world—Having a child and making a family. Now comes the greatest adventure—raising one, together."

McConaughey first spread the good news of Alva's expectant status on his reggae-playing website.

"My girlfriend Camila and I made a baby together," McConaughey blogged in January.

"It's 3 months growin in her womb and all looks healthy and lively so far. We are stoked and wowed by this miracle of creation and this gift from God, and so excited for the adventure that will come in raising this child, being mother and a father, and shepherding him or her through this life."

"Just when I think life cannot get any 'SWEETER,' Matthew and Camila fill life with more...so here I am DRINKING FROM MY SAUCER, BECAUSE MY CUP IS INDEED OVERFLOWING WITH THIS NEW BABY," McConaughey's mother added to the site a few days later.

The child's name has not yet been released.

'Bachelorette' Deanna and Jesse: 'Soul Mates'

On tonight's season finale of "The Bachelorette" Deanna Pappas chose Colorado snowboarder Jesse, accepting his proposal to "spend forever" with him, even announcing that a wedding date was set!

Both Deanna and Jesse described the other as their "soul mate" in the finale, and before Jesse arrived with the ring, Deanna told the camera, "My connection with Jesse is so strong. I feel like I cannot live without him."

Getting down on one knee, free spirit Jesse said, "When I first came into this I would never have thought that this process was real and that I could fall in love here, but I have fallen in love with you. … When I look at you, the word that always pops into my mind is 'forever.' I truly believe that you are my soul mate. … Deanna Marie Pappas, will you spend forever with me?"

Deanna, accepting his ring with a smile, exclaimed, "I love you. I've waited so long to say that. I love you."

In 'The Bachelorette: After the Final Rose,' the happy couple announced that their wedding date is set for May 9, 2009, and the nuptials might take place in the Bahamas, since that's where they fell in love. ABC gave the lovebirds a honeymoon trip to Santorini, Greece, in honor of Deanna's Greek heritage.

Unfortunately, in order to accept Jesse's proposal, Deanna had to turn down Jason, the thoughtful single dad from Seattle.

After he got down on one knee, Deanna interrupted him, saying, "No, I can't!"

She went on to say, "You have no idea how much I care about you. You're this amazing, perfect person."

However, a "but" was coming. "Even though I'm falling in love with you," Deanna told Jason, "I'm in love with someone else."

On the limo ride afterwards, nice guy Jason, reflecting on his divorce, told the camera with emotion, "I've had a huge hole in my heart for years." However, Jason noted he would always have his young son, Tyler: "The only for sure thing I have is my little boy."

Did Sienna Miller Inspire Sad Song?

Actor-rocker Rhys Ifans has penned a bitter ballad – prompting speculation that it describes his heartbreaking split from Sienna Miller.

The song, called "Stonefinger," appears on an upcoming album by Ifans's band, The Peth, which has been touring Wales in the weeks since he and Miller, 26, broke up.

The lyrics are certainly poignant: "Every little thing you said would break me/All of it came true/Every bit of love I give you mock it/Yes you do." And it goes on, "Every little thing I do you hate it/Oh yes you do."

Steve Carell's Red-Carpet Rescue of Anne Hathaway

Personal questions were strictly forbidden at the Italian premiere of Get Smart on Monday – but that didn't stop one reporter from asking the movie's star, Anne Hathaway, "Was the separation from your ex-boyfriend painful?"

The actress's former flame, Raffaello Follieri, remains in prison, awaiting trial on a dozen counts of wire fraud conspiracy and money laundering. And while Hathaway, 25, has continued with her publicity tour, she has steadfastly refused to discuss the split.

After the reporter lobbed the question, Hathaway remained silent and attempted a faint smile.

But, as if on cue, her costar Steve Carell valiantly stepped in to declare: "In my role of agent [for] Miss Hathaway, I would like to say that she does not answer questions relating to this subject."
